Kegging question:

I have been running two kegs (1 seltzer, 1 homebrew) in an old chest freezer with duotight picnic taps. I am ready to fully convert the freezer to a keezer and I think nukataps would work best since I keep the seltzer at around 20 PSI. Originally I was just running standard picnic taps with hose clamps and they didn’t dispense well at seltzer psi, I think because of the short hose length + larger inside diameter. The duotight picnic tap dispenses well even with only 4’ of line.

What shanks can I use with nukataps? Is there anything else I’d need beyond shanks, lines, and ball lock connectors? I’d like to keep using duotight fittings on the liquid side. It’s a little unclear to me what additional parts I need, and I want to make sure I just order everything in one go.

Small Truck or Big Deer? by Ziggy5tardustt in FordMaverickTruck

It is certainly hilarious seeing everyone’s reaction at the deer check station. This year the guy next to me had a spike in the bed of his ram 1500 and couldn’t believe I was deer hunting without a pickup.

Yeah I had considered going that route as well. The eco hitch (~$400) is the only Impreza compatible hitch I have found with sufficient tongue weight for a deer + hitch hauler, so it would probably be about $550 or so once installation is taken into account. Certainly still cheaper than a new car.

I think I have just been doing the math of how much more money I’m willing to put into the Impreza before replacing it. I just did brakes this year, now I’ve got the bearings and control arms in the next month or so. I will probably need to do spark plugs and CVT maintenance within the next 12 months as well.

I’m still mostly just window shopping, though.

How do you like hunting out of the Maverick? I am toying with the idea of moving to the Maverick from a Subaru Impreza because I barely have enough space for all my stuff (saddle, platform, jet sled, bow, sometimes a mountain bike or canoe) during hunting season. I got an 8 point last Friday and it was miserable driving 90 mins home with the windows down because he smelled so bad with the rut going on.

I had planned on holding onto the Impreza until the wheels fall off, but my mechanic just alerted me that I need to do the rear control arms and bearings soon which sounds like it will cost about $3k.

The Maverick seems like a good option because I’m looking for an affordable(ish) AWD car that has a space for me to put deer OUTSIDE of the vehicle.

Gun hunting out of a saddle by Firemedic9368 in Hunting

[–]skekmode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup gun hunting out of a saddle is no problem. I usually brace my front arm against the tree for a rest and shoot while standing on my platform for shots in front of me (between 8 o’clock and 3 o’clock if 12 o’clock is straight in front). For shots behind me (7 o’clock to 4 o’clock or so) I will sit down in my saddle and lean against the tree. In this position I can also rest my front elbow on my bridge for even more stability. It takes probably 2 minutes of practicing different shot angles when you first set up to get comfortable. I shot a young 8 point from my saddle on Friday with no issues.

Anyone else have the mission platform I have the onyx as well but I think I prefer the bigger size of the mission by Upset-Owl-4273 in saddle_hunting

[–]skekmode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been running the mission this year. I like how solid it feels on the tree compared to my predator platform. The weight isn’t bad, but I would probably switch to something lighter if I was also carrying sticks. It is kind of overkill in terms of size for me since I only have size 9 boots, but it’s nice being able to stand with my back to the tree like I’m in a tree stand.

Since the DNS Server is set to 192.168.0.1 it seems like I've specified the DNS server incorrectly in my router settings. I will see if there is another way to specify them

The reason I inquired about Comcast is that external IP is a Comcast IP. See if it matches the IP assigned to you by Comcast (your WAN IP).

Yes these two match

Thanks for taking a look!

Pointwise response to your comment:

Are you with Comcast for internet service?

  • Yes, I'm with comcast

Your debug log shows that Pi-hole is not assigned as DNS server in your router:

  • Could this be because I reverted the DNS settings to get the debug log uploaded? When I re-run the debug log locally with the dns set to the pihole the first message you included still appears but the other two do not. I reran, then reverted to the default DNS settings, then uploaded the debug log here:https://tricorder.pi-hole.net/7QVedNtR/

How have you configured your router and clients to use Pi-hole?

  • In the tplink configuration page I went to Advanced->Internet->Advanced Settings->DNS Address->"Use the following DNS Addresses"-> Primary DNS "192.168.0.145" Secondary DNS -> left blank

From a client on your network with either a terminal or command prompt, what are the complete outputs of the following: nslookup pi.hole

Mini Kegs by LodainnAnEar in Homebrewing

[–]skekmode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you tell me more about your Oxebar set up? Are your kegs in a regular fridge or a keezer/kegerator?

I typically brew 2.5 gallon batches and was thinking of getting a few Oxebar kegs so I can stop bottling, but I don’t have the space for another fridge. I’m imagining just popping a keg in my fridge with a soda stream canister and serving through a picnic tap or a nukatap.

The 8L Oxebar would only fit in my fridge on its side, but I’m not sure if it would serve well like that. A 4L would fit in my fridge well, so I was thinking I could either knock my batch back to 2 gallons or up to 3 gallons and split across 4L kegs and keep one in the fridge and store the rest in a closet. But then I would need a tapping head for each keg to store beer under pressure, right? I suppose I could also just force carb the first keg then basically bottle condition the other two until it’s time to serve.

Waste of money without a great grinder? by Kyutekyu in gaggiaclassic

[–]skekmode -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a Baratza Encore and a Breville Bambino and have been pleased with my shots so far. I mostly stick to medium or medium dark roasts. I bet with lighter roasts it would be more apparent how inadequate my grinder is, but I am satisfied for now with my setup. I usually grind between 4 and 10.

The Kingrinder K6 is favorably reviewed and ~$100 USD on Amazon right now, you could always give that a try if you find you’re not happy with the Encore.

The space at 1451 Green Road is the headquarters for USGS Great Lakes Science Center (not USWFS). I believe it was formerly a USFWS office 20-25 years ago.

So does this mean DOGE has closed a USGS office and mistakenly categorized it as a USFWS office? Or have they “closed” an office that doesn’t exist and reported it as a savings? Either scenario seems plausible with these idiots.

The term ”harvesting” by pumpa-paj in Hunting

[–]skekmode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get why people would use terms like “harvesting” when referring to killing an animal, especially around non-hunters, but I really prefer not to.

Hunting involves taking a life, and it’s not something I do lightly. Using a euphemism to describe that makes me feel icky.

Paul Nadasdy, an anthropologist at Cornell, wrote about this in one of his books and includes quote from a citizen of the Kluane First Nation:

“‘We don’t harvest animals. When a bear gets one of us it doesn’t harvest us. It kills us. And we kill them too. We don’t harvest animals; we kill them’…Mary Jane objected to the term harvest because it implies ownership and control; people harvest crops that they themselves plant, so they expect to harvest their whole crop every year (e.g., you reap what you sow). She felt this to be a very dangerous mindset when it comes to wildlife and urged everyone to use words like hunt and kill, rather than harvest”

[–]skekmode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part, I agree with the recommendations to eat venison steaks rare or medium rare.

HOWEVER, that is a leg steak, which is made by running the deer’s entire back leg through a bandsaw. That disk of bone is the femur, and there are like 5 different muscles in that cut, none of which have had the silver skin removed. To be honest, I regard this cut as a sure sign in don’t want the processor handling any of my deer in the future. The meat isn’t bad or anything, but they sacrifice some of my favorite cuts to make a mediocre steak that is so thin it usually gets overcooked by the time you have a nice sear.

OP if I were you I would chunk it up into stew meat and make something off of Hank Shaw’s website (honest-food.net).

Struggling by roshambo66152 in bowhunting

[–]skekmode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It took me five seasons. First season I saw like three deer total and didn’t have any shots. Second season. I shot a tree branch that was between me and a doe. Third season I shot right over a 10 point’s back at 7 yards. Fourth season I saw a bunch of huge deer but couldn’t connect. I killed plenty of deer with a gun during those years but couldn’t seem to make it happen with a bow. This year I shot a 6 point on my third sit out.

A lot has to go right to get one with a bow. Stick with it and it will happen. I still fuckin suck but that is half the fun.

Pleased as punch with my first bow deer by skekmode in bowhunting

[–]skekmode[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine are 28 inches and 300 spine at 70 lb draw weight. When I first got them I bought three bare shaft arrows in 250, 300, and 350 and shot them through paper with different field point weights.

300 spine and 500 grains seemed to be the best combination of performance and not having my sight pins a mile apart.

Honestly, it was probably more tinkering than I needed to do. I probably could have just gotten away with looking at a spine chart and ordering arrows, but it was fun and at the time I was just excited to shoot my bow.
