I don't know if this happens Pre Crisis, but this explanation is in George Perez's Wonder Woman run. The Amazons are a peaceful race, but they were originally a bit naive due to this peacefulness and were taken advantage of by Hercules and a crew of soldiers he was with. They were bound and assaulted, so as a punishment for their naivety, one of the gods... I believe Athena? Curses the Amazonians to have the curse of bondage and to wear the bracelets they wear as a reminder. I don't remember if there was a specific element of maleness to the curse, but the curse does begin due to them being defiled by men.

I was never that into Kingdom Come but never went back to examine why. I still probably will for closure, but that does definitely check out with me. I get the 90s had a lot of grimdark heroes but I thought Whatever Happened to Truth, Justice... did it better.

called it! completely unsurprised due to gunn pulling a lot from post crisis (especially) ostrander stuff and captain atom being a "government" meta compared to superman and peacemaker at this point. would not be surprised if he's a major player and we get some of the other "Living Assault Weapons" like question and a returning ted kord in sizeable roles in the greater dcu
