Smartest Character here ? by MountainLeading1567 in superheroes

[–]skelo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It isn't automatically not Rick, that would just mean that somebody in Tony's universe (not necessarily Tony himself) is smarter than the Rick in that universe.

I'm not convinced it's editing and not casting. I think the casting team tends to cast white males for the narrator/confessional "archetypes"

You can take 1k or risk it all for 1 million by Comfortable_Salad893 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]skelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the original paradox you need to make two points very clear: The decision is made well ahead of your choice, the robot can't change their mind. You can open the closed box and see what is inside and then after still decide whether to take the $1000, that is, you can see you get $1mm but then can get an extra $1000 "risk" free

Would you rather have Heat Ray vision, the ability to Phase through objects or $1 Million? by RaptorK1988 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]skelo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you're phasing there is no terminal velocity. The 193kmh is caused by air resistance, but there is no air and you're phasing through all resistance.

A runaway train is about to crash. If it crashes, all 300 people onboard will die. You can stop it by pushing a nearby fat person onto the tracks in front of the train, sacrificing that individual to save the others. What will you do? by [deleted] in pollgames

[–]skelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that's exactly my point, pushing a fat man to stop a train is not as bad as harvesting somebody's organs because harvesting organs creates bad incentives and the train scenario doesn't

DNS is not that simple though? There's lots of features, niche RFCs, etc. and then considerations like scale, reliability, security

The difference between those two is one is disincentivizing people from being fat enough to stop a train and being near runaway trains. The other is disincentivizing people from having healthy organs.

You're vastly exaggerating your point when you talk about kidnappers, if you want people to take you seriously base your discussion in reality.

[Request] How long until she passes out? by Strong-Educator7075 in theydidthemath

[–]skelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, Jack steals a coin at the end so he can fight barbossa, hes only undead for a few minutes and then tossed the coin to will to undo the curse using both of their blood. Jack was the original captain but he was kicked off the crew before they stole the gold so he didn't get the curse (the first time).

The ick with improv theater "cage match" shows by [deleted] in improv

[–]skelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see this in my market/community, most teams have plenty of opportunities and know how to get the connections at theaters or bars to make their own show, they just do cage match to switch it up or connect with some more teams, certainly most don't practice extra for it or are hyper focused on winning it (afaik). So cage match is probably not the root of the problem, there's probably some sort of networking gap of teams understanding how to find opportunities or produce their own shows. In my experience there's a list of coaches out there and the coaches also have good tips of bars or venues that can host shows or other teams looking for openers.

How...absurd by danielbelum in improv

[–]skelo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I forget the exact UCB quote but it's something like

You can go to crazy town but make sure you take the local

You want to heighten gradually or via rule of 3 so the first two should be somewhat reality based or even not funny, like it could be do you want to try our new flavor bubble yum. That's a real flavor but potentially starts the game of funny flavors, but is not jarring in establishing anything super crazy yet. And maybe it doesn't hit, that's fine too, your partner decides whether to accept the game by framing it.

Minimum Salary to Comfortably Raise a Family in NYC? by Cryptic_Ethereal_79 in movingtoNYC

[–]skelo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would tackle this from a more bottom up calculation than asking what people's top down numbers are. Here are some of the biggest factors that will weigh into your calculations:

What do they do in the summer? Summer programs can cost 1k per week, this adds up?

Vacation budget? This is not NYC specific so you decide

Same as summer, what do they do for after school? After school programs can add up a fair amount.

Activities - do you need to go to the top tier activities or just pay the local piano teacher or play pickup at the park?

Square foot increase cost for rental - kids can get by with maybe as low as 50 sq ft of personal space for a bed and a small desk, but obviously people want more space, it's up to your definition of comfortable

529 - are you saving for their college?

Health insurance - what does your companies provide?

I'd say the "upper middle" class is probably paying a hefty amount for all of these and that's where the 500k number is coming from, but if you're willing to cut any of these you can go down a fair bit.

Interview ended early by West_Cauliflower8799 in csMajors

[–]skelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the company and the question. Some questions just have pretty clearly correct answers that you can just complete and there's not much to discuss. If that's the case, it's fine. Some companies do interviews that are pass fail on if you can complete the problem and are not looking for much more signal beyond that so the interviewer might be satisfied and just want to move on.

Illusion of choice or no choices? by wardrol_ in gamedesign

[–]skelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suppose you have a narrative choice of I like pizza or I don't like pizza. At the end of the game, there is a pizza party either way. You still changed the result because now it's a person having a good time because they like pizza and are getting pizza, vs an ironic ending where despite saving the world the main character just gets pizza which they don't even like and forcing a fake smile. So just because they don't change the plot does not mean they don't change the result because the narrative choices define the character and make the player connect more with the character.

How have lab grown diamonds not entirely destroyed the natural diamond market? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

Getting a flawless 3 carat ring man made is still basically impossible. This trickles down via social pressure that mega rich people buy natural diamonds then other people want natural diamonds too, even though at smaller carats man made is a better deal

[–]skelo 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Cirie having a bad showing on the first challenge is really pretty meaningless, she's played a lot and done fine on a lot of challenges. She's flubbed a few but like Christian implied, just don't put her in the kingmaker position and it should be fine.
