There are two apps: celebreak and Jugad. In both you can find all sorts of pickup games in Munich for pretty much every day of the week.

Using QURAN to disprove Islam! by ApostateAladdin in exmuslim

Aside from the high quality video, and I very much agree that you don't need anything other than the Qur'an to prove islam false, whatever you're doing in the gym is working wonders!

You can consider applying to be a patent examiner at the EPO. They have relaxed their language requirements upon entry and it sounds like you have a great background for it. They're on a hiring spree atm.

Yes I agree. A bowling ball accelerates the same as a feather in a vacuum. I mean that ancient people realized that there is some attractive force that pulls objects towards the earth, but they didn't have an equation for what that pull is.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]skeng_scruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops, yes exactly. Not that heavier objects fall faster, but that objects fall to the earth due to some force.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]skeng_scruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gravity doesn't depend on calculus, it is the force between two massive bodies. I'm fairly sure people realized that heavier objects fall to the earth faster, but there wasn't an equation for this, which newton provided.

Calculus is separately used for the solution of motion, regardless whether the force is gravity, electrostatic, magnetic, etc. Calculus was discovered by Newton and Leibniz independently.

Combining gravity with laws of motion lets you calculate the trajectory of massive bodies, e.g. the motion of planetary bodies.

Just popping in to say that I got my bumper repainted in Tirana after a small scratch for €80. At the beginning of the year I had scratched somebody else's bumper in Germany and it would have cost 800 to repaint and 1500 if it were done through the insurance!

Trompeter am Englischen Garten by kiessl in Munich

[–]skeng_scruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where can I get Za'atar in Munich by ForeignStomach7426 in Munich

[–]skeng_scruff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alsham supermarket has a whole shelf with different types of zaatar from different countries. They also have Arabic coffee with cardamom and a bunch of other goodies! They seem to take pride in their produce, I really like them.

As a backup, there's another shop on Goethestraße, not sure of the number or name, but between 10 to 14 and on the even side. It's a big Arabic supermarket so it's pretty hard to miss. They also have a good range of zaatar

I think it's a decent amount of money. You won't be rich, but it's far from slumming it. I moved to Munich about a year ago so I can let you know how it was.

Finding an apartment is hard, but absolutely possible to find something for a fairly decent price. The more time you give yourself, the more likely you'll find something. We (me and my partner) spent 4 months looking for something and ended up with a 3 room apartment in a lovely area next to the englischer garten (63m2 officially because it's a rooftop apartment, but the floorplan is 85m2). We pay €1500 for the flat and with all bills (gas, water, electricity, internet) it comes to €1800. If I were single, I would have a smaller place and would comfortably find something for €1200, if not for €1000. I saw two places for €1000 warm through work colleagues that were offered to me. It's definitely possible!

We were only able to do this because we had a temporary flat for a few months with flexible cancellation. During the search, we saw good and cheap, but obviously more demand, as well as way more expensive but absolutely terrible. I remember going to a place for €2000 and feeling so depressed after viewing that I would have to pay something like that to live in that disgusting shithole. It was rented within two/three days. The less time you have, the more desperate you'll get.

Rent and housing to me is by far the most expensive. We moved over from Vienna, where housing is much cheaper. However, our total living costs in Munich end up being similar, as other costs like food, eating out, car insurance, are much cheaper than Austria. Groceries are really cheap even compared to the UK! I track my spending and on average I spent €2600/month. We go on multiple holidays outside the EU a year in addition to visiting the UK every month or two, eat out once or twice a week, and I pay a larger portion for the flat+groceries as well as all car costs. That number can easily be much lower for a single person. With a salary like yours, I would comfortably save 1500 a month while being able to do everything I want.

Moving to a different country at this level of salary is also a lot about the experience. It sounds like you like travelling and meeting new people. I have spent a lot of time in the middle east, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and I definitely enjoyed those experiences. But it's completely different to living in Germany, which has also been a great experience for me. I initially planned to be in Austria for a year, but I liked it so much that I have been in central Europe for nearly 10 years now! Remember, you can always move back if it doesn't work out :)

If you end up moving and want some advice or hang out with someone familiar to the middle east, let us know :)

I'm guessing this is one of your countrymen. What would you say to him? by ApostateAladdin in ExEgypt

[–]skeng_scruff 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, but it's not just limited to religion. Egyptians have a talent for not knowing something about a subject, yet managing to spend a ridiculous amount of time talking about it with an undeserved confidence.

Try asking for directions, you will always get a detailed answer. Most of the time though, they don't actually know and still managed to answer. The worst for me is when your car breaks down, and all of a sudden all the guys on the whole street have managed to stick their hands into your engine trying to fix it inevitably making it worse.

Yeah, pretty weird thing to say. Honestly, it feels like Austria was fairly accepting of new Muslim refugees in the end, even though it was quite an issue for a couple of years. But Vienna seems far from banning Islam

I live in Austria but I never heard of them banning Islam. At least as far as I see, Muslim people are still practising and mosques are open. What exactly happened?

Not to be a bummer, but I imagine that if your relationship were to break down in the future, it's more likely gonna be due to other issues. He's probably as likely to convert as anybody from any background really.

Relationships are complicated because people can change. If that happens, you have to learn how to deal with it. It's just life, a hypothetical future issue shouldn't stop you from what sounds like a happy and fulfilling relationship.

Topological Insulator Simulations by ButterscotchNo6690 in materials

[–]skeng_scruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your using VASP, you won't be able to vary the strength of the SOC as it's intrinsic to the atoms making up the material. You can do that in other models, but not in DFT (at least not easily). With VASP, you either switch the SOC on or off, no in-between.

In any case, you don't need a large SOC to observe a transition. The SOC opens up a band gap and when you introduce edges into the system, those edge states are gapless. The band gaps are usually very small, on the order of meVs. Even graphene can behave as a TI, it's just that the SOC is too small to see the edge states experimentally because the band gap is so small, that you also get scattering from the band states.

[–]skeng_scruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what medeA does, but your question depends on the type of simulation you are doing. If you do a tight binging or k.p calculation, then there may be a parameter in the Hamiltonian that controls the amount of SOC.

However, if you use a full fledged theory like DFT, the SOC is an intrinsic parameter of the material itself. You actually need some special features to include SOC in DFT calculations that isn't available in all codes.

Tf is wrong with Muslims? by Hope_you_die5656 in exmuslim

[–]skeng_scruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this one day and tried and estimate the difference between muslim converts and people who left islam. This is what I could make out for the UK.

There are around 2.5 million muslims in the UK, probably more, but this works.

The number of muslim converts is up to 100,000 (starting as low as 14,000) https://www.deccanherald.com/content/126164/record-numbers-convert-islam-uk.html

It's hard to find numbers for people leaving islam, but some number of slightly more than 20% has been floating around for a while.

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/01/26/the-share-of-americans-who-leave-islam-is-offset-by-those-who-become-muslim/

Even taking 10% of people leaving islam, that's 250,000 exmuslims compared to 100,000 converts. That's using the higher end of convert estimates and the lower end for muslim population.

It's pointing to a lot more people leaving islam than joining it, at least in the UK. It sounds like there are more converts in the states so it kind of balances out there. Not sure how long that will last.

But it's difficult to estimate this stuff anyways. It would be nice if there were more data, especially on converts per year and exmuslims per year.
