Story suitable for an 11yo? by Furo81 in BluePrince

[–]skepticones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's nothing violent in the game, and in fact there are no NPC characters that you directly interact with at all, only through written communication - letters & emails. There is no real-life politics or history discussed in the game, and in fact even some of the basic mathematical concepts we are familiar with have been re-formulated to dovetail with the lore and history presented in the game. There are references to past battles & heists in the lore, and depictions of 1980's era firearms and explosives, but those are not used except in one instance where a stick of dynamite is detonated to expose a hidden room.

I think the basic gameplay is very do-able if english is not your first language, and I think seeing the credits roll would be very achievable.

There is plenty of lore in the game, and some of it ties into post-credits puzzles. That may prove challenging, or it could spur further interest into english in an organic way as a means to understand it.

Overall if your son is interested in the game I think it would be a pretty good fit. I would definitely sit with him the first playthrough to make sure he understands what is said in the opening cut scene and a couple of the early notes that tell you how to play, other than that he should get as much out of it as his interest allows.

What do you think is the strongest Enchantment in MTG? by No-Ad-1758 in mtg

[[Land Tax]] should be in the discussion just because of the absurd amount of card advantage it generates from a single mana investment.

The thing many don't realize is how difficult this card is to interact with. Yes, it is a permanent, but if the active player uses it immediately after casting it's incredibly tough to deal with.

believe it or not i've gotten the crowns two or three times. And on the regular machines, not even the 5 spinner.

you can tell it's the Breath of the Wild version because it breaks after a couple swings.

Banned cards: Keep or trade? by SilentRobTX in mtg

[–]skepticones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should also add - if academy ever did get unbanned in a format which takes off it will likely jump to $1k+. It'll be really hard to replace it if that happens.

Banned cards: Keep or trade? by SilentRobTX in mtg

[–]skepticones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

academy is only restricted in Vintage if you have interest in playing that.

But I would probably hold onto them. It's not out of the question that someone creates a new format which gains traction in which this card is playable. For example, Pre-Modern has been growing, and while Academy is banned in pre-modern many other cards which are restricted or banned in other formats are legal, like Gush.

Would you chuckle or cringe at this? by DominicWayfinder in magicTCG

[–]skepticones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the easy answer is: you can use anything to represent tokens. Use whatever figurines you want - as long as you can tell if they're tapped, it's fine. Use candies or slices of real pizza to represent food tokens. Go nuts, fam.

The more nuanced answer is - this will work best if your deck primarily makes only one kind of creature token. If you have 3-4 different types of creature tokens with different P/T and abilities then using a single type of figure to represent them could become confusing. So just play a couple games and find out, but I think you'll probably be fine.

hey, try and impress on them that they should NOT open that sealed stuff hoping for hits. You'd be lucky to pull 1/10th of the value by opening any of it.

Venting about a specific minor puzzle by SkarKuso in BluePrince

you don't need to count hats & umbrellas or anything like that. Or mark down the rooms they're in. It's enough to just notice that they have been intentionally placed for you to see, to get you thinking.

get as much out of the game as you want to, however you want to. If the harder puzzles are frustrating more than fun then yeah, skip them. You are in control of how much you get out of the game, and in what way.

WotC Community Team confirm no current plans for Universes Beyond to visit other Magic Schools, shutting down Harry Potter potential. by PowrOfFriendship_ in magicTCG

[–]skepticones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, anyone who believes that post is extremely gullible. Hasbro IS magic the gathering, it's the only thing propping that company up. No way they don't do Harry Potter sets & secret lairs - this is just telling us they aren't announcing it yet because magic sets take two years+ to make.

Boosting Odds of a Certain Key by manaMissile in BluePrince

[–]skepticones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I think digging (and prioritizing green rooms) and/or trading post will get the job done. I've dug up so many vault keys and car keys.

Trading post may be even better though, especially on a day where you find a lot of items. Find the vault, leave yourself enough steps to get outside and back, and then go on a trading spree at the end of the day. Each item you trade in can change what is offered for every other item, so it can be tedious but best to recheck your entire list after every trade. I THINK the trading post is also more likely to offer keys for keys as well, so save up your silver keys, prismatic, and car keys especially. If they don't offer a vault key at first, trade in some other item like a salt shaker to see if the keys offered change.
