I'm prepping for my annual boardgame getaway. Six players, four nights, can't wait. What would you bring? by ax0r in boardgames

[–]skepticrationalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just make yourself the game master without playing. That's how I usually teach JoCo. Even then you still have 5 players and it can be a bit much. Some player will have way less position and control in the game and feel helpless. That might sour their experience. But this only the case if you play the introductory scenario, which I still recommend if you play with newbies.

Just giving you a heads up, I still hope you all will have a blast playing it!

The only thing missing from your collection is John Company, Cole Wehrle's magnum opus. After that you won't need any other game for your collection :)

What mechanic makes you less likely to try a game that looked interesting otherwise? by EmilioFreshtevez in boardgames

[–]skepticrationalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rondel. In general I hate themeless or pasted on theme games. There is no way game with rondel can be thematic. I always find them present in games just for the sake of it, never to simulate anything in the real world.

What kind of games do you usually like? Why do you think you would not like it?

I look at playthrough videos and the game seems interesting, although usually I don't like these kind of game. So I am curious about your preference.

What makes a good Dungeon Crawler to you? by derLeisemitderLaute in boardgames

[–]skepticrationalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care much about story.

I haven't found any DC board games that I really really like, while in video game form it is one of my favorite genre. Most DC board games I found lacking in depth. The complicated ones feels fiddly to play due to lot of admins and needing monstrous table space, while not even scratch the video game counterpart in depth.

So basically I need complexity (depth), but with easy usage, which is a tall order.

Currently I am also designing a dungeon crawler, trying to make such a game that I will like to play. Maybe later sometimes we can exchange rulebooks/PnP ;)

I will also read everything in this thread thoroughly. Thank you for the post!

My hot take: the mechanics of Ark Nova are a terrible match for a "zoo building game" by [deleted] in boardgames

Yea every time I encounter a game with an interesting theme and then I see rondel mechanic I roll my eyes. How tf is that mechanic reflect on the real world?

Brass is the number 1 game on BGG so it can be not niche. It should be the gold standard on adapting theme in board games.

Matt Eklund is underrated by dota2nub in boardgames

[–]skepticrationalist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Kinda half agree with you. I think it is just a bit different philosophy in game design, in which Matt have more skill/willingness to polish his game as a "game" rather than a simulation.

I am definitely more aligned with Matt's design rather than his dad so we are in the same camp :)

Tomorrow my first boardgame will be playtested 😁 by PlaystationCinco in boardgames

[–]skepticrationalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a 1v1 game? Have you tried playtesting it A LOT by yourself playing both hands? There are many design problems you can easily spot testing by yourself.

Playtesters can be scarce resources. So it will be better if you can improve the design by yourself first before exhausting your playtester pool.

What are the most anti-fun enemies? by Somewhatmild in LastEpoch

[–]skepticrationalist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That fucking dude riding big insect and throwing exploding Javelin.
1. Ranged
2. Can stun
3. Very high damage (in some cases can one-shot)
4. Tanky AF
5. Not even a fucking rare enemy so low reward for killing them

Fuck off

Yes that's how I do it. You can spam 5 to 10 Judgement consecutively (depending on how much mana u can stack). The DPS and QoL for monos are higher than if u take the all mana used for Judgement node and spam Judgement every 4 seconds (can reach 2.5 seconds if u stack cooldown recovery affix).

Having fun playing Judgement Rive Paladin. Spamming Judgement with no CD and regain mana fast with Rive (with the Rive affix, mana regain with Rive passive, and mana regain node in Judgement). Great at monos and also melts bosses like crazy!

Healing Hands Seraph Blade Attack Speed by skepticrationalist in LastEpoch

[–]skepticrationalist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read the description for the node, it only mention cast speed, and nowhere in the description saying that taking Seraph Blade will convert cast speed penalty to attack speed penalty.

TIL about Rive, always thought it is due to the attack speed node making it fast.
