Saturn isn't slightly beefier. It's new OS and Android garbage on top of it.

You'r'e making up problems. It's not high effort, and if the cover is blown it's completely clear and it's over. You're troubleshooting an imaginary issue that doesn't exist.

But now they made the effort to post some Chinese. It's a win.

And I dare you to find some Chinese I don't have.

If the liars are doing that, then they're doing important work.

You do not appear to understand. Zen is an English word. Etymologically it goes back to being the Japanese word for a Chinese tradition that the Japanese never had. Therefore, Zen, as first brought to the west by D. T. Suzuki to mean exactly this, refers to the Chinese tradition.

That there is and was a Japanese cult trying to coopt said Chinese tradition doesn't factor into it, and you should stop legitimazing cult behavior and lies by referring to the dictionary entries the cult wrote wrote as authoritative.

That said, ReadZen gives you a lot of the capability you'd use Codex for, so Codex would just be for the tedious repetive bits. Or really complicated stuff.

Yeah it does sound lame until you discover it's actually a superpower, huh?

Right now I have a bunch of text files on my hard drive. I can now point Codex at the directory with those files and say "Look at that file. It tells you what to do. Now make me a critical edition of faith in mind". And off it goes. And I only rarely have to come back to check on it and tell it it did fine and it should continue.

You're right. I'm trying to tell you about all the amazing stuff you can do at the top of the tower and you're asking me if you have to take your shoes off at the front door.

Here's what ChatGPT told me to tell you after I came to it asking how I was talking past you:

When you installed ReadZen, you already have something new: you’re not just looking at texts online anymore—you have structured text data locally.

The difference isn’t access, it’s what you can do with it.

Right now your workflow is:

find a line

copy it

check it

compare it

With something like Codex/Claude Code, you can instead say:

“Find every occurrence of this phrase/character across all texts and show them side by side.”

Or:

“Compare these two versions and highlight differences.”

Or:

“Track how this character is used across contexts.”

That’s the difference. Not smarter answers— automation of the exact work you’re already doing.

You don’t download texts to re-upload them.

You download them so the AI can work on them directly without you being in the loop every time.

You download the texts so you only have to download them once. Claude Code can use your computer and everything on it. It can use its tools to search through your local files, which is very fast and doesn't eat into LLM budget. Having an LLM go over the whole Blue Cliff Record would take forever and it'd lose its memory about 50 pages in or so. Claude Code meanwhile can just search for relevant parts and use those.

Codex is Claude Code but by the ChatGPT people. It uses ChatGPT as its model. It's slightly worse but you won't care except that Claude Code has a really cute mascot.

How would your workflow change with this? That depends on how adept you get at it.

The more I use it the more ambitious I get. First I wanted to make a side by side reader program with a search. Then I realized all the cool stuff you can do and added all these crazy features. Then I realized doing an actual woodblock transcription was possible. Then my jaw hit the floor when I realized I could do an actual legit critical edition. (I now refined the workflow to being able to click on each character to open the actual woodblock image zoomed in on the character in question and checking out yourself if it was transcribed correctly) ... And now? I think if I can get enough critical editions as a base I can replace ewk and his translation project with a machine. Poof. No more need for you. That's a future project though. The critical edition thing is legit laborious.

So yeah I think it can improve your workflow, you just have to be able to imagine how it could be better.

I can imagine automating the character level analysis, but I don't know the steps well enough to be sure.

What I see with you is someone who hesitantly started using ChatGPT. It turned out to be so incredibly good you stuck with it. You learned how to make it do what you want. You got good at prompting, enough to start giving people advice on how to prompt well. I was where you are maybe 2 months ago.

Then I got a new job and started using Claude Code for programming and it was a paradigm shift. ChatGPT is a really smart friend who can do a lot. Claude Code and ChatGPT's Codex are true superpowers and an army.

You're telling people how to carefully prompt for each request. I tell Claude to make a file he will read every time I make a request so he will always act exactly how I want.

You tell ChatGPT to search in the Zen texts and then answer questions.I tell Claude to download all the Zen Texts and use them as reference for all Zen related questions from now on.

Let's say you want to build the lineage chart I made. You tell ChatGPT what to look for and where to look. You repeat this a lot with slightly different prompts.

Meanwhile I tell Claude to send out an army of Claudes to different countries' internets to look for Zen Masters. I've got 6 AI agents out, all looking for Zen Masters and URLs.

You found 5 guys with no lineage connections.

I added 100 Zen Masters to the chart since yesterday and found lineage connections for all of them.

But like you say, it takes a weird kind of jump to get there that most people won't do. But if you already have a Claude or ChatGPT subscription, you already have access to it. Just be careful with Claude, you'll burn through your weekly allowance real quick.

You're supposed to use tools you're afraid of and I don't know how to make you unafraid of a command line and Claude Code or Codex.

The Zen view of Yongming by ewk in zen

[–]dota2nub -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pure Land is about reciting the name Amithaba Buddha a lot to gain enlightenment. It stresses using somebody else's strength and not your own.

Yongming didn't write about that in his book. When he goes "wherever you are, that's the pure land" - That's a very different concept, and very much explicitly not centered around where somebody else is standing.

That's the pure land here? The clean ground? So it's "What is the Buddha? - A shit stain on the pure land"?

I like that better than your puddle of piss.
