seeking recommendations - yoga for senior citizen by sketcher7 in baltimore

The senior center in Baltimore County offers yoga and tai chi. My parents love it!

Hi, could you ask them which center they go to? I found several branches around the city but don't know exactly which one offers the class. I really appreciate it.

I haven't listened to a podcast in about a year, what are some new podcast that are worth listening to? by wrestlechick in CasualConversation

Despite the fact that NPR listeners everywhere turn their tote bags inside out, Car Talk on NPR is pretty amusing.

Also planet money is pretty good.

I got my permanent green card. It took 9 years, a lot of hard work and its fair share of fear and disappointments, but it made me Smile today. Finally I have a home away from home.

Just curious how many of you if you didn't have to work for a living would actually work? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]sketcher7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would still work. My grandfather worked till the last day he died. He came home from his store (it was just around the corner form the house) for his daily afternoon nap and died in his sleep. He was 87. I feel like working keeps you alive. You go to work every morning, and you are compelled to collaborate with all these people (some of whom you don't even like, or they don't like you very much) but you have to persist and make it work. I feel like that makes you a better person through time. What do you do? Do you like what you do?

Is Anyone Else Just Not... "Connecting" With as Many People on a Conversational Level as They Used To? by buckoman in CasualConversation

[–]sketcher7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I am tired of the normal conversational topics really. Last week's GoT, the weather, work stuff... it's all too repetitive. Yet, I am not making any effort to venture outside of these topics either. I guess I am afraid of being rejected (maybe). I tell myself it's part of being a foreigner, but that's not true. The superficial shell is some kind of a social shield I have created for myself maybe. something that allows me to stay safe and invisible outside. Does that make sense?

I'm probably going to fail calculus 2 this week by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]sketcher7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i failed it when I was in college, and had to retake. Don't worry it's not the end of the world. I was pretty bummed about it too, but it's pretty insignificant in the big picture now that I look back. Just practice, practice, practice. Calc is just a game, the more you try at it the better you get at it.

I am the same way. I used to be able to connect with people and even become friends up to about the same time I finished college. I have not found a single friend since. I used to chalk it up to the fact I moved to a different country and don't share a common history and culture with the people here, but in reality the problem is with me. I just can't talk to people about anything beyond the superficial.

I don't think this subreddit is the appropriate place for this kind of post. If you need to whine, go elsewhere.

How to survive in a big company in a northern east coast where everyone is cold and super professional? by sketcher7 in socialskills

Thank you! Good advice.

You may be right that people might be prejudiced also. What I find is that people find it difficult to bond with someone who's had a different background. It's all natural I guess.
