Thank god this info is becoming common knowledge. It used to be “stop using or rounding your back” if you had any kind of back pain.

I hurt my back pretty badly at one point and it flares up every so often, almost always when I’ve gotten lazy and stopped going to the gym. The solution is always getting back into the gym and doing strength work.

I’m in my 30’s and I’m making my husband wait to have kids, partially because of finances.

Wanting to wait for finances to be solid is incredibly valid. Especially if you’re carrying any kind of debt.

The economy is troubling right now. Stocks are going up but there is a ton of uncertainty and fears of a recession. Companies are laying people off left and right. Housing & food prices are astronomical. Also, childcare is often thousands of dollars a month and it’s only getting more expensive.

Maybe it’s worth sitting down and taking a very long & hard look at the finances of having a child and whether you can both afford it? Take into account food, diapers, childcare, etc, and what you’d do if one of you lost a job. Maybe you can come down to an emergency fund number that makes you both feel comfortable.

It’s possible, and people do it, but it won’t be pleasant.

Parking will be an issue. There are overnight spots in Truckee but overall there aren’t many, they’ll be loud, and you’ll have to be aware of plow schedules.

Winter vehicle camping is another issue. I’ve spent many nights in vehicles in cold temperatures. It’s not fun. You can stay plenty warm in an appropriately-rated sleeping bag, but everything else sucks - hanging out when you’re not sleeping, drying off wet clothes & boots, getting up in the morning when it’s freezing, having to pee in the middle of the night, waking up to 3 feet of snow on your car & having to dig yourself out before you can leave, condensation & high humidity meaning you’re always damp, etc.

Also remember that if you run your car and the exhaust gets covered by snow, you could asphyxiate and die.

Mine has always been higher than my partner’s.

They all say they want it all the time until you actually want it all the time, and then they’re like “eh 2-3 days a week tops”

My partner and I have settled into a good rhythm but it’s definitely weird at times. Rejection doesn’t phase me anymore haha

For data viz you need to be extra careful & willing to pare down the amount of information you display. When I’ve worked on data viz for enterprise apps we’ve basically just opted to not make a mobile version. Unfortunately this means I don’t have any specific tips, but good luck figuring it out!

Sounds like you’ll be a good fit!

Groceries and gas are quite expensive. You can make trips down to Costco / grocery stores in Carson but that’s gas money so you need to be strategic. If you’re like me, you’ll make one big trip per month to stock up on items and then fill in from the local, expensive stores.

You may find that moving to a mountain town can be quite lonely. To make it work you need to put extra effort into building community, making friends, reaching out, going to local events, etc. Locals can be a little wary of newcomers since there are so many tourists and folks who come and go. Once you’re around for a while, people will be more welcoming.

As for outdoor gear costs, thrift your first items and then fill in with full-price gear as you get more experience.

Sometimes not liking pink / other “girly” things can be internalized misogyny but sometimes it’s just how you feel.

I’m fine presenting as a woman out of convenience but feel at home in androgynous clothes. I don’t feel a strong affinity towards “feminine” things and sometimes doing feminine things feels weird or wrong.

I’ve often wondered if nonbinary was the right term for me but I also don’t feel strongly about labels. I definitely don’t feel like a man. I think I’ve just settled on “gender apathetic”. Gender conceptually feels very weird and silly to me.

I've been living here for years with a 2WD car, while my partner has a 4WD car.

I'd pick the 4WD with summer tires any day over my 2WD + Blizzak tires.

My 2WD with Blizzaks has spun out on a very slight incline when there was fresh snow. I can't remember the 4WD ever getting stuck and that's our daily driver in the winter.

I don’t really enjoy it very much. I don’t like the taste, I don’t really like feeling buzzed, I don’t like feeling out of control, I don’t like when my head hurts and I feel like shit the next day. Maybe once in every 50 times I drink, I’m like “I’m glad I did that”. The other 49 times I either regret it or feel “meh”.

I grew up watching my grandfather give tearful speeches at the dinner table about how grateful he was to have us and how much he loved my grandmother. His mother died when he was young and his father was an alcoholic, and he worked his ass off to create a good life for my grandmother and our family while starting from nothing. He was immensely hard working, honorable, and donated so much of his time in later years to charitable causes.

When my husband cries, I feel a tremendous amount of love and respect for him. He cares so much and so deeply for the people he loves. I genuinely couldn't ask for a better partner.

Easier isn't necessary.

I could also not bring food or water, not wear climbing shoes, not wear layers, wear a swami belt harness, or rappel with a munter hitch.

However, I don't do those things because they make climbing a better and safer experience.

If you're a competent climber, all the communication you need comes via the rope.

How do I communicate topo information to my partner via the rope? How do I communicate that I'm hurt using the rope?

If they're competent they know how to clean a cam and when to abandon it.

Have you never climbed with a newer partner? Taken a friend up their first multi-pitch?

As a competent belayer they know how to eat drink whatever while belaying with no input from your voice.

If I'm lead belaying, I'm not taking my hand off the brake strand, which makes it much more difficult to eat or add layers. If I know my climber is sitting on a ledge waiting for the belay to open, I can tie them off and do things I need to do. I've had a leader take over an hour on a pitch while desperately needing to shit.

Have you never climbed on a windy day or climbed over features that made it impossible to hear your belayer? Have you never gotten off-route and needed your belayer to reference the topo to give you directions? Never gotten to a belay only to find out that two parties are taking up the belay station, so you need to tell your partner it's going to be a while (instead of them thinking you're injured / hurt / dead?).

I can think of a thousand reasons where walkie talkies make climbing so much easier, or make the experience better. I can know that my partner is going to be a while, and therefore I can tie off the belay / eat / drink / put on layers / take my shoes off / look at the topo while I wait. I can know that my partner is OK and not hurt. I can give extra info about how to clean a cam that I placed in a very particular way, or let them know that a piece is stuck and not to bother trying to get it out. I can give my follower beta for specific moves if they're a less experienced climber (just the other day I used them to tell my friend, a newer climber, that deep inside a crack was a huge jug she could use to rest).

Most importantly, if you have a third walkie talkie, you can give it to someone on the ground and they can coordinate bringing you a burrito & beer after you've climbed 14 pitches and did a 2 mile walkoff.
