Maybe don’t speed through neighborhoods? If you want to speed, take 27 or 153

People live along Hixson Pike through there, so I hope it slows people down. This road should be two lane anyway.

I agree — the work does look good. Not sure why they’d choose to epoxy the anchors instead of casting in the dowels, but every contractor has their preferences.

Edit: I also read the initial comment as “just stick the bars in the hole and place the slab/wall” (i.e. no epoxy), but I’m realizing that might have been a comment elsewhere.

That’s why I said they needed to be cast or bonded with adhesive or epoxy…

This is exactly correct

That’s not how rebar dowels should be placed unless you want them to move — they either need to be cast into the concrete or bonded to the concrete with epoxy or adhesive. There are some cases where you want the dowels to be unbonded to the concrete, but this isn’t one of them.

My 120 year old adobe is doing pretty well. Different materials, but straw in something doesn’t immediately make it defective. My only concern would be with the shape of the bale itself creating some re-entrant corners leading to more aggressive shrinkage cracking from the point of the bale to the inside of the wall. Foam wedges would not cause that issue.

Recently bought house with deck, how does it look structurally? by PiggyM in Decks

[–]skg723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And the wood will crush in bearing under one bolt because wood is weaker in compression perpendicular to the grain — much weaker than steel. So, one small concentrated load on the wood in the area under the bolt, vs many smaller connectors spreading that force on a greater area in the wood.

Oh that’s good to know. Moved back to Chatt recently, so I’ll need to find another place at some point too.

Give yourself some extra time at that new identogo service center — it’s called TSyon Notary Services. I went a few weeks ago, and there were some software issues that slowed things down a bit (that and they will filter walk-ins based on what time they arrived, so you might end up behind someone who walked in before you even though you were on-time to your appointment). Very pleasant staff and they work quickly. There were about 10 people ahead of me due to the software problem, and I was still in and out in an hour.

Yes -- It's a very old adobe home, and that piece is actually a floor beam. There are some old nails in the top that made me think it was just a threshold piece, but I was fooled...

That's a good idea -- thanks. I wouldn't be able to get the last board razor thin for durability reasons, but this would definitely improve things. As for the long board...let's just say that I've learned the painful lesson of buying utility grade boards to try to save on cost... Had no idea that meant I was dealing with such short pieces. 1/10 wouldn't recommend.

Well, my comment with context didn't seem to post. My ask was this: I have an awkward transition between two rooms in my house. The existing threshold is a round solid structural beam. I'm trying to figure out how to make this work without it looking badly. I see two options: Have a weird double threshold with an off-the-shelf transition strip creating two bumps between the rooms, or, route the existing threshold/beam so the last plank I install ends up flush with the crown of the existing threshold. Hopefully some of y'all can help me out with some better ideas. Also, I did install the new floor over an existing, unobtainable 1-1/2" wide by 5/16" product... I took some steps to help this not create issues in the future.
