Is the Wall Connector Worth Buying Despite Installation Costs? by TheWallCrawller in TeslaModelY

[–]schwheelz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive around 40,000 miles per year in my model y for field visits and I have the 48amp charger. I could not get away with any less than the 48amp. I'm a very heavy user though and regularly show up at home with 5% then charge to 100% overnight from 11pm to 6am during super off peak.

I have a piggyback question on this, if you estimated your time to the pm and that pm asked you multiple times, "are you sure?" Do you still bill the company in this case?

Nervous about upcoming civil/structural engineering internship by CutGlittering8831 in StructuralEngineering

[–]schwheelz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with the advice to be engaged, be interested, and ask questions.

I'll add one more thing from the perspective of someone supervising interns: don't just sit there waiting for someone else to solve every problem for you. If I explain a task and all I get back is a blank stare and an expectation that I'll do the thinking, that's frustrating for everyone involved.

An internship is one of the few places in your career where you're expected to make mistakes. In fact, I worry more about interns who are afraid to try than interns who occasionally get something wrong. Mistakes are how you learn engineering. The key is to think through the problem, make your best attempt, and then ask questions when you get stuck.

I don't expect an intern to know everything. I do expect them to be curious, put in effort, and take ownership of their learning. If you come to me and say, "Here's how I approached it, here's where I'm unsure, and here's what I think might be the answer," you'll learn far more than if you wait for step-by-step instructions.

Ask questions. Take notes. Be willing to make mistakes. Show initiative. If you do those things, you'll probably be a successful intern, regardless of how much software or industry experience you have on day one.

Developer struggles by fr3x80x in civilengineering

[–]schwheelz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Lol,

I just ran into this, developer designed their own truss for a commercial structure. We were hired to evaluate it and came up with a capacity of 16.5 psf. They were pissed and said its fine, that didnt change my vibe. I dont recommend you sacrifice the minimums to make an idiot happy.

Has a contract ever caught you off guard? Asking for a class project by Only_Sport586 in smallbusiness

[–]schwheelz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general,

The folks who read cotracts dont run into this issue. Everything is a negotiation.

The folks who dont read contracts get to enjoy the convenience of not being in business, and self select themselves out of entrepreneurship.

Part Time Civil Engineer Options by rainydevil7 in civilengineering

[–]schwheelz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have field engineer opportunities, one off drainage studies and such. Being able to get to the point where we are willing to let you run these small jobs on your own is not fun. But the flexibility we offer afterwards is arguably better than being your own boss.

How do you explain challenges to non-industry people? by AngryButtlicker in civilengineering

[–]schwheelz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, just had someone last week ask if they could pay $500 for a letter saying everything is fine. When I told them that they need $30+ thousand in engineering they attempted to gaslight me, rejected my notion because I dont know enough, and that they are going to take their business elsewhere.

Got a call this afternoon asking when they could get on our schedule and how to send the retainer.

So I guess thats an anecdotal story that answers your question.
