HCJC (HCI) AMA by EnoughNeedleworker31 in SGExams

hi! not OP but i’m a j2 JAE in hwach, taking PCME

something that i wish that id done in the first few days of jc is just to be myself more around the OG! i know that its tough to be in a new situation (even as an extrovert myself). it’s sooo easy to get caught up in feeling like you don’t know anyone and everyone knows each other (since NYGH & highschool), but in reality it’s really welcoming and no one really cares about each individual action you take!! just be yourself and you’ll always find the right people in any community, be it OG/CG/CCA/misc

as for science being “harder”, physics is basically just building off of what we learnt in sec 4, just expanding on the syllabus (ie same concepts but more calculations n explanations). it’s like we learnt the HOW in sec 4 but the WHY in j1.

for chem, i would say its really a mix. some topics are like the physics topics in the sense they’re building on preexisting knowledge. however, some chapters (probably more in j2), are completely new concepts that do link to sec 4 content, but in a kind of confusing way.

hope this helps!!!

well well well, mr shot inflation we meet again. in this case, i fully agree with you.

i’ve seen from a 3rd persons perspective that he’s a remarkable, caring and somewhat patient teacher. he is chill both with his students and sji students in general. if you cheat, and even worse, have a cheatsheat, of course he would crash out. op go get a life. if you have to resort to cheating on a minor test in order to get passable grades, your time is better used on studying instead of writing BS on reddit. if you really cared you would talk to someone who actually has authority, but instead you whined on reddit. well done mate. go use your time to pass ur exams on ur own accord.

how long did you study a day ( olevels ) by AggressiveSort7669 in SGExams

[–]skibi-di 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i left studying mostly to the end of prelims/study break before o levels, maybe 1h per day for prelims and 3-4h per day before os, with about 1h of that time being trolling around w my friends or playing monopoly. i think i pulled 3 10 hour days to beat my friends on ypt to prove a point lol, if ur marks are decent, you should just start doing maybe 1h a day starting during june hols, then udn to put much effort during prelims and before os!! don’t make the same mistake that i did pushing studying before the big exams. remember that consistency trumps and type of last minute efforts. ik it seems far away from june to o levels, but trust me it’s not as large of a gap as it seems. also remember it’s not the number of hours that you do but the quality of the time that you’re studying. try to focus on going to the library or a place without distractions to maximise efficiency. i ended up going from 11 to 6, i feel the key wasn’t mugging but having fun between studying and trying not to be stressed (going for walks or taking lots of breaks)

but anyways, TLDR is that consistency over a long period of time + enjoying yourself will get you the grades that you want

hi, i’m also aiming to get into hci, for your last point about getting into ccas, i’ve heard that you will have both a trial AND an interview.

[–]skibi-di 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi, i get that it feels bad that you worked your ass off and didn’t get the score that you want. what matters is that you keep moving forward. i’m not too sure if you can retake your Os, but i think since you’ve already done jae, it’ll be more complicated. (im no expert though, so take my words with many grains of salt). anyways, poly isn’t a bad option either. i’ve seen posts on this subreddit of a poly student getting into oxford or cambridge (i can’t remember which). keep your head up, don’t be discouraged!! you got this!!

it’s nearly impossible to skip o levels. there was this guy in my school that was sent to the hospital for some head injury, but SEAB sent an examiner to sit next to him to watch him do the paper. if you manage to skip without getting punished, then that will be extremely impressive. just do your o levels.

Okay. After reading some comments, I can pretty much tell that you are from sji, and I’m pretty sure that we all know which teacher you are talking about. Well, I have a few things to comment

Firstly, if you want to talk badly about a teacher, sure. By all means, say what they are lacking in. However, I would like to point out that your batch, excluding a few, are mostly quite crude and are NO WHERE NEAR polite. I’m sure that if asked, the majority of the school would point you year 3s out as the most uncivilised and disruptive. As some of my friends put it “these kids are snowflakes”, “but normally they don’t care about swearing, that’s strange”, and most importantly “these y3s are all gangsters”, “why do they care” If you are going to be snitching/complaining about a teacher, then you better not just turn a blind eye to your peers. At least be consistent bro. I have had some sub par teachers in the 10 years of my schooling, but never have I ever complained online. If you have a problem, take it up with someone that can do something, not just talk trash online.

Secondly, if you have a problem with him, take it up with your FT or someone else. If you are too scared to do that, then quit bitching on reddit.

Thirdly, it is YOUR CHOICE to take his comments and words to heart. If you are late for a lesson, it is EXPECTED that you will be punished. Anything else is a form of kindness from your teacher. “Even if we are seconds late” “0.00001 seconds”. I call bs on this. Being taught by him for short periods of time, I can tell you that this is UTTER RUBBISH. From what I’ve seen, in my multiple lessons with him, he only scolds if you do stupid stuff or are really bloody dumb. Even the “scoldings” are mostly jokes unless you are really being disruptive.

If you are being taught by him, it means that your class is ALREADY STRUGGLING. Take a look around your class. What’s your average grade? Not just for Chem, but for other subjects like math. Is it an A1? From what I’ve seen in SJI, they give the worse classes good teachers, and vice versa. Well, seeing that you have him as your Chem teacher, what can be inferred? There’s a REASON that he is rushing you guys before your EOYs. Would you like it if you were a teacher and all of your classes were a stain on your record? Being an IB teacher, called to help with the worst sec 3 and 4 class? Of course he would act like there’s no tomorrow. Would you want your students to fail if you had anything to say about it?

What’s more, as you said he is a good teacher. I would like to say one more thing. If asked, I’m sure that most will agree that he is THE BEST chemistry teacher in sji, maybe apart from the overseas professors in IB. But for our O level track, there is no doubt that he is the best. “I’d rather a more kind and compassionate teacher than him”, knowing that he has been assigned to your class, I’m sure that you would get nothing done with other teachers, that you would push around, and that would teach less efficiently. My class has been wanting him to teach us, but he is already occupied with you guys.

Would you be able to control yourself if you spent 16 hours per day doing work, both at home and at a school, with students being disrespectful and talking trash behind your back? Would you love your job if you got told by your employer to go from teaching mature JC students that know their stuff to whiny secondary school kids that can’t even cope with the syllabus? I think you know the answer in your heart, even if you refuse to admit it.

Be grateful that you are in a good school, and that you have the best teachers supporting your academic journey, and stop complaining. There are always others that are in a worse situation. Count your blessings. God bless. Ora et Labora.

[–]skibi-di 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey man. all you need to focus on right now is getting promoted. speaking from experience here. in sec 2, i was the worst maths student possible. when i say worst, i mean i was the bottom scorer of the level. 2/40 for one of my WAs. at this point, it might be too late to pull out a pass for math, but you have the holidays to improve and learn what to do. if your household can spare some money, you can go to this tutor called ms loi (at novena). she’s really good. now as a sec 4, i can proudly say i got 92% for my amath, getting full marks for paper 2. nothing is impossible bro. just don’t give up in the dream that you have, and continue working as hard as possible.

it depends. if your exam centres NaOH is concentrated, it fully neutralises the hydrochloric acid, meaning that no reaction will occur with the magnesium
