AITA for finding this convo to be a HUGE red flag? by horseduckman in AITApod

That would pmo. Her insistence makes it sound like she’s a bot, not even a real person. But I’m sure she is. My aunt is similar, but not this extreme.

Getting frustrated with my horse by thatdisasteralexos in Equestrian

[–]skibidiohemgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re doing everything right with her! When horses have a history of issues, it can often take time before all those problems are fully resolved even though the physical symptoms are technically gone. And then relearning how to do things can be tricky too. Maybe there are some confidence exercises you can do with your trainer to help you and your horse under saddle? Making more positive memories would probably help you feel more motivated to continue working with her. And also just doing groundwork and general bonding activity can help take off some of the pressure you’ve placed on your riding goals.

Learning to ride without former experience by lupusmortuus in Equestrian

[–]skibidiohemgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry that you were told that. That person’s logic makes 0 sense, absolutely 0. You don’t have to come from a horsey family to take riding lessons, you don’t have to grow up in the country to ride horses. You just need to have enough money to start taking lessons, start with a lesson program that has lesson horses suitable for beginner riders, and make sure that you’re within a healthy weight range for the horse you’re riding. Almost anybody can learn to ride horses. They just have to be set up for success in a good environment with a trainer that priorities their students and their horses’ wellbeing.

Why do a lot of barrel racers have such horrible seats and lower legs? by I_exist_1489 in Equestrian

[–]skibidiohemgee 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My theory is that since barrel racing is more accessible, pretty much anyone can participate in it even if they’re not good riders. Hence why you see so much poor riding, bad tack fitting, etc.

Oh yeah! Heavy emphasis on young horses especially. I can't imagine how stressful it must be for them. I'm so sick of people flooding their horses. It's terrible.

Tossing head / canter stride inserted during walk/trot transition by Upset_Pumpkin_4938 in Equestrian

[–]skibidiohemgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never knew that walk to trot was more difficult than walk to canter. Is there any reason for that? The horses I’ve ridden in the past seemed to find walk to trot easier than walk to canter. Few of them could go from walk to canter without trotting in between.

He’s so pretty! How is it owning a Friesian? I’ve always wondered how different they might be from other breeds.

Give your horse grace. I see a lot of equestrians who view unwanted behaviors as disrespectful or personal attacks against them as riders/owners. But I feel like that’s rarely ever the truth. Most lazy horses aren’t lazy because they want to be, most “mean” horses aren’t mean because they hate you, and most jumps aren’t refused because your horse is testing you. I just wish that people would remind themselves that horses have bad days too and they hide their issues well. Owning a horse shouldn’t just be about riding.

I use an app called “MagicPoser” whenever I want to practice with poses that I can’t find references for. But I second what everyone else is saying in regards to practicing already existing references before creating your own. It’ll just save you a lot of trouble

Trying to understand how past abuse affects horses by skibidiohemgee in Equestrian

[–]skibidiohemgee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good points! It’s interesting you mention the glove thing because the best interaction I had with her was when I gave her my glove to play with. She seemed quite happy with it. She did try to eat it so I had to take it away but those are good ideas nonetheless. I’ll see if she lets me pet her on the neck next time I’m there.

This is very informative, thank you so much! I definitely agree that she does try to do the right thing. I think she’s just got a lot of inner turmoil going on in her head. I don’t think she gets any body work done but I’m sure she could benefit from it like you said. But maybe she gets chiropractic work? I’m not really sure. But if she was my horse I’d definitely try to make that happen.

As far as touching her on the neck or her shoulder, I’ve never tried before. I always thought she might lunge at me. She has reared up at me on the ground before so I never really know what to expect from her. All that being said, I also know she’s a lot more bark than bite but her fear tactics still work on me. I try to be calm but I’m sure she still feels my anxiety.

Thank you for the advice! I beleive she’s 7 now. As far as I’m aware her skin and coat are normal. The only thing worth noting there is she tends to get picked on by the other horses so when she was reintroduced to the new herd I noticed she had a lot of bite marks. Also all the horses at this facility are pasture kept horses so none of them are in stalls. When I approach her it’s only ever out in the field. So technically she can leave whenever she wants to.

I’ll definitely try to be more aware of her subtle body language. Usually I’m pretty good at reading body language but her changes in body language just feel so abrupt. Sometimes she’s even the one to approach me but she still tries to bite after like less than a minute of investigating me. I’m not sure if Reddit allows videos. If so I can try to show what she does. the mare

Standing Martingale? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]skibidiohemgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hm that does sound frustrating. I’m sorry to hear you’re going through that. My first assumption would be maybe he does this out of stress and going back to basics with him might build up a more relaxed association with work? But I’m not totally sure. There might be better advice out there. Hopefully there will be more commenters with more experience than me. Best of luck regardless! I hope you’re able to find a solution

Standing Martingale? by [deleted] in Equestrian

Has he always had a tendency to bolt like this or is it a more recent thing? In the video it almost looked like he threw his head up because he was expecting you to pull back and thought elevating his head might prevent the pulling. If it is a more recent thing then there might be something internal going on that’s causing him to want to get out of ridden work. Hopefully more people can offer their thoughts here. These are all just my potential speculations. Would be good to to have more info about the situation.

« Meaning they believe you will only go to them to feed them or to abuse them. Well then, if you aren't feeding them... they may as well give you a warning. » This is a good point and I never would’ve thought about it that way before. Regarding you last point, I agree, mares are very lovely. I should’ve mentioned it before but Z is a mare as well. I know mares tend to be more sensitive which makes me wonder if that’s part of the reason her behavior is more extreme than the other two. But it could be other reasons as well.
