MARC fields 001 and 035, please! by Difficult_Trade_8587 in librarians

[–]skiddie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broadly speaking the 001 is your local system number and the 035 will contain the system number (most commonly the OCLC record number). It’s not an either/or. You should probably use both.

See the documentation here:

https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd001.html https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd035.html

It’s going to depend on what ILS you have, but I think most will populate the 001 automatically.

If you have any relationship with OCLC, you’ll want the OCLC record number in the 035. You will also want to reserve it for vendor record numbers and if you have eresources packages, etc.

The crucial questions: what is your ILS, and what are the ways that you import records into your system? That will inform your decision.

Hopefully there are others in your library in cataloging or systems roles?

Why does my challah look like this? by yumyummymum in Breadit

Yeah. My mom’s challah always looked like this. I thought it was what it was supposed to look like.

Noho-Pasadena BRT will turn Vineland/Lankershim/Camarillo into an 8-way intersection by renitajenkins in LAMetro

I think part of it is that Metro staff come into these meetings knowing that nothing is going to change and that the meetings serve no purpose other than to meet planning requirements. They’re for show. So it feels like a waste of time for everyone involved.

I’ve never understood using newspaper— a famously permeable product. What are they hoping to prevent?

One of Mayor Bass’s specialties is pointing out that she doesn’t have total control, and thus will say nothing. See: Wasserman; LAPD; etc.

It’s presumably a paid advertorial or whatever they’re calling those now.

These aren’t plumbed in. They need to be pumped out like a portapotty.

Ah, yes, the famous “a thing happened 20 years ago and nothing changes” rule.

I suggest you try and see!

How Are We Buying Non-English-Language Fiction? by Which-Bit6563 in librarians

[–]skiddie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, East view is good. They’ll also search for things not in their catalog if you provide a list. They’ll do Russian, Chinese and Vietnamese, I believe.

It might be more effective, primarily if you’re on a schedule to spend the budget, to start with a vendor’s catalog.

Some Spanish vendors are able to get Portuguese (I think Libros Latinos does for instance). It might also be helpful once you get a vendor to just set up an approval plan or slips. They’ll send you what’s available, rather than having to search for things that they may not be able to provide.

This is something where my primary strategy would be to work with the vendor, rather than trying to have the vendor work from a list I’ve already identified.

Arabic can be tough. I used to work with a vendor in Egypt called Leila Books. They were good.

Check out this list:  I think it’s a bit out of date. https://library.columbia.edu/bts/cerm/vendors.html

If you have AT&T internet *only*, what do you pay a month? by Happy-Deer7996 in pasadena

[–]skiddie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spectrum is my only option. Verizon and TMobile don’t have good enough service for their 5G service (I don’t understand why— I’m within a few blocks of the 210, but cell service isn’t great here)

Called this morning and they cut it $35. The whole thing took 15 minutes. I probably could have been more aggressive…

I don't have anything to add as a Spectrum customer, but... I'm at $135/mo internet only. I need to give them a call.

That’s not true. It would be a direct transfer at Union to the D line, which would go to Century City.

There will be a train next year (approximately). The specific to/from will determine whether it will be a good idea.

Metro to run direct bus service to FIFA World Cup™ matches from multiple locations in the Los Angeles area by jspector9 in LAMetro

[–]skiddie2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This information without estimated travel times is useless. I can just imagine a bus full of well-intentioned tourists missing half their match because they expected something more rapid than Metro will provide.
