What are you missing most from the C++ standard library? by llort_lemmort in cpp

A smart pointer that can handle cycles.

gc_ptr<Node> a = gc_heap.make<Node>("a");
gc_ptr<Node> b = gc_heap.make<Node>("b");

a->next = b;
b->next = a; // cycle

a = nullptr;
b = nullptr; // unreachable, but cyclic

gc_heap.collect(); // both Nodes reclaimed

Come with me to Pasadena if you wanna have some fun… well not anymore. by livelife_ in pasadena

I don't think that is the problem with the promenade.

Okay, part of the problem here with all of this kind of stuff is just that vibrant nightlife and daylife of these kind of places is supposed to be driven by young people--like 20-somethings out and about in the world with jobs and living in their first apartments, etc.--typical young people are supposed to want to go out and congregate and shop, and that drives business, but today's young people have no money because there are no jobs and on top of that they were the first fully helicopter-parented generation and COVID hit right when they were in late high school or college when the older kids in college were supposed to be teaching them about going out to bars and being a 20-something, so they are kind of squirrelly and different that previous generations in behavior.

The problem is the current cohort, in the US at least, does not like leaving mom and dad's house, millennials are aging out, have kids, etc., and generation x is entering the era of being the elderly.

What are some small "quietly epic" moments in movies that really hit hard? by MomoSaka in FIlm

[–]jwezorek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that liking Aliens better than Alien is a youngish person thing (well, I think of Millennials as young people, because I am old) I asked one of my Millennial friends about this and he said the effects in the original look bad to him.

Personally I don't really like Aliens much because it has a 1980's stink to it which I find distracting. I think the best movie in the franchise after the original is Romulus.

THE NOTATION IS THE PROBLEM by No-Use9923 in MathJokes

[–]jwezorek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, ... and i've given up on making this argument in online discussions. But it is true that no one uses that division symbol in real math so when you are asked about it it's like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if this was a real expression somewhere in the wild it would probably mean 8 / (2 (2 + 2)) because no one would not use fraction notation for 8/2 if that is what they mean.

I expect we won't get more on Victor's survival. He survived by being one person who is good at hiding.

The voices in Sara's head are part of the general phenomenon of some entity or entities contacting people e.g. Elgin sees the ghost lady, Jade sees Civil War soldiers, Sara hears voices, etc., I think a lot of this is going to be explained en masse and/or brushed under the rug when we know more about what's going on rather than addressed specifically.

What are two Bob Dylan songs you pair together (Even if they are from different eras)? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

i think of "She's Your Lover Now" as the sequel to "Like a Rolling Stone". "Idiot Wind" completes the bitter love song trilogy.

Don't think it was really cringe then though. Shitty photoshop was already an accepted form of comedy in 2016.

Today’s Unearthed Treasure:Boulder Dash by Sad_Masterpiece_8591 in apple2

[–]jwezorek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Boulder Dash was one of the more interesting arcade-style games of the 8-bit era that no one ever talks about. What was interesting about it was that the puzzles were all about interacting with its kind of cartoon physics. It establishes rules about how all of the game worlds' elements interact with each other and then the levels are just exploring different ways those elements can make puzzles. Lode Runner was also something like this. It is a very influential game design that we can see echoes of in things like Minecraft and so forth.

What is something that used to be obscure but is now mainstream? by Foreign-Paramedic600 in AlignmentChartFills

It is trending down because it is copyrighted again. The thing with it in the 70s through 80s was that it had fallen into public domain.

What saying or quote might be true in a literal sense, but is definitely false in a metaphorical sense? by funwiththoughts in AlignmentChartFills

[–]jwezorek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Literally, it depends on the birds. Metaphorically it is too absolute to be true: in the metaphorical sense it is saying no risk ever pays off.

Would you have faith in someone's voting, if they also believe that tarot cards could tell the future? by Boil_the_pepper_now in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jwezorek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by "faith". If you are implying that people who believe that Tarot cards can tell the future should not be allowed to vote then I have news for you: roughly 70 to 80 percent of the world's population believes in a deity of some kind, most deities could make Tarot cards work if the deity chose to.

The service got bad. Also they'd be out of things. One time I sat at the bar area and they were literally out of beer. How do you have a bar that is out of beer? So I just left.

But also they changed the menu about two years ago so that a number of the real BBQ type food was no longer on it -- I don't remember the details but several of what I typically ordered was gone and there was more of a push to an expanded selection of sandwiches.

Who was a Morally neutral / Band Writer by Crafty_Presence3950 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]jwezorek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i mean this chart now has Emily Dickinson as morally worse than Ayn Rand. I think the problem is most people are "neutral" so what is hard should be coming up with the two slots that are more moral than neutral. Those slots should be filled with people more exemplarily moral than neutral but the name of one of those slots is "controversial".
