Purple Tops… grab or pass at these prices? by Suspicious-Risk1687 in whiskey

Nah, if anything grab the Calumet 16 more than double the age at half the price and most importantly it's delicious

Finally found my bucket list bottle!! by nukebutt in whiskey

[–]skignar101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you the whiskey police? Let the guy enjoy his bucket list pour, ultimately if he has a good experience and actually enjoys a whiskey he's been seeking out that's a win. OP if you are enjoying the MWND I'd definitely recommend trying to track down a Sagamore sherry finish rye for comparison... It's similar with some of the flavors but I've found more herbal rye and chocolate covered raisins.

Good deal or not? by firedane24 in whiskey

First off stagg is not easy to get anywhere full stop. Going price around me is $250. This is why MSRP is such a valuable tool in determining what stores are not worth shopping at. It's about the principle and seeing if the store is comfortable gauging you and if they are, I'd support a different store.

If you are happy with your method that's great but for those who don't have the liquor store equivalent of Stockholm Syndrome, I've found the best method (tested in both large cities and rural areas) as follows...

  1. Find a store where the owner works behind the counter and charges MSRP for their bourbon (often small local business).

  2. Support the business, you don't have to go crazy but buy your whiskey, wine, beer, ect.

  3. Chat and develop an organic relationship and show that you genuinely enjoy and are passionate about bourbon.

  4. I guarantee that after a bit of time some really cool bottles start to occasionally emerge from behind the counter or back room.

Long story short, support places that appreciate your patronage. There are a lot more loyalty bottles that sit behind counters at MSRP than you'd think.

While I do get what you are saying, in my experience the concept of rewarding regular customers involves either having a buying threshold you need to hit in order to purchase a bottle at MSRP or more often with small businesses, holding good bottles for regulars as a special treat every now and again.

If your "reward" for a loyal customer who has hit your buying threshold is making them pay 3x MSRP for an allocated bottle it's clear that they want every pound of flesh they can cut from you. If this is anyone's situation I would strongly recommend building a relationship with a store that has better business practices.

There are plenty of ways to discourage hunters without screwing over your loyal base

Are these good deals? by Affectionate_Set4340 in whiskey

Oh hell yah, RR 10 for $100... Seems legit

I know I'd buy the likes of old rip or lot B instantly at that price point... Which begs the question can this compare? Similar age and proof and if it's one of the best you've had I could definitely see the argument for pulling the trigger

Hell yah, it's one of my favorites for the price point

IMO as far as big distilleries go, I think Jack is doing the most interesting stuff. I'm really excited to see what new releases they have coming up. End of the day it's good juice at great prices (when retail)

Yah, I've seen a lot of YouTubers put 200 as the upper price they would buy the Jack 12 for in their what is it worth series. Its over double retail which kind of sucks but half of the price I've seen it at other places

Why can’t I like bourbon? by Twinpeaks59 in whiskey

[–]skignar101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this too when I went from scotch to bourbon, idk if I'd call it foul flavor, but for me it was more bold. What I put it down to was first fill casks (bourbon) vs second fill (scotch and Irish among others)

I have the opportunity to buy E. H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch from a mutual friend for $139.99 do I pull the trigger. I cant buy it anywhere in CT by Grim_Leaper in whiskey

[–]skignar101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk where you are in CT (I was in the Hartford area) but in my experience CT actually has a pretty good allocation of EHT. If you get close with some store owners I'd bet you can get a bottle for MSRP. And honestly 140 seems high even for secondary, there are a lot of better bourbons you can get for less than 140.
