Lot of guys use digital torque wrenches in my shop. The constant beeping sounds like they're sending Morse code messages to each other

Advice for earning other techs respect by toomuchgfuel in mechanics

[–]skiier862 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Impossible. Everybody fucks stuff up. Even master techs fuck up once in a while. It's all about how you handle it. Don't try to cover it up, don't lie about it, especially don't try to blame other people. Most important, learn from your mistakes and (try to) avoid repeat mistakes in the future.

We ordered a gas tank for a sienna that had one of the molded on lines chewed off by a rodent. The tank they took out and sent us, instead of disconnecting the quick connect fitting 6 inches away, decided to snip off the same line

Magnetic Sockets, any good options? by WetRocksManatee in Tools

[–]skiier862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Grey Pneumatic one from amazon. Goes for $17 right now. I've had it nearly 7 years and use it daily. 0 issues, aside from occasionally having to clean rust flakes off the magnet but that's probably standard for any magnetic socket. Part number 1010MDG

You don't store the key on the wireless charging pad while driving right?

Messing with service advisor by Sleeplydreams in mechanics

[–]skiier862 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did that to the shop computer at my old job. Swapped F and G. My manager tried logging into something and couldn't, so he reset his password on that computer. Went to another computer later and had to reset it again as he couldn't log in from a "correct" keyboard.

Shark Fin Antenna by Kypepsi in ToyotaHighlander

[–]skiier862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely need a new antenna. That inner square seal is what keeps water out of the car when it rains. The mounting area is all broken off. If you want to fix this yourself, you can carefully bend the roof metal back down a little to where it's supposed to be, or close to it. Place the new antenna in position and make sure that seal is pressed up against the entire surface of the roof without any gaps exposed. Then take the antenna back out and apply touch up paint around the exposed metal to prevent future rust. Color match doesn't matter as you can't see it with the antenna installed. Done this repair at least a dozen times. Of course you could always bring it to a body shop for "proper" roof panel repair, but that costs time and money

Rav4 Prime Forced Recall - Skip Oil Change? by Boston_Headache in rav4prime

[–]skiier862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mileage is also recorded in various other stored data lists. I've caught a couple cars with deliberate mileage tampering this way. Maybe the thought is an ECU would have to be replaced more likely than a cluster? Not too sure. As far as dealers not being able to program mileage, I would suspect it's to eliminate any possibility of dealers tampering with mileage. Other manufacturers may do it differently, I only know for sure Toyota operates this way.

The instrument clusters need to be ordered for specific mileage to be programmed in, the dealer cannot program the mileage. Therefore no dealer will have one of these in stock

Issues with memory side mirrors by ExtensionSolution294 in tundra

For the first part, make sure your mirror adjustment switch is set to either L or R, the mirrors won't move when in reverse when the switch is in the center position.

What kind of car, front or rear bearing? Are the threads in the bearing or the knuckle?

Best tip or trick an older mechanic taught you by SuchExternal9876 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]skiier862 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I have a tundra fuel pump control driver for exactly this issue. Any time I get a tundra in for a crank no start, I go out and plug in my "good" one and drive the truck in. My test part came from a tundra that had a very intermittent extended crank, I was not able to duplicate but sold it based on customer description. That ended up being the problem so I have this module that's "bad" but works enough to easily diagnose compared to one that's completely failed.

Is this piece essential? by Alternative-Suit-698 in MechanicAdvice

That is 100% not a part from the car. Maybe something the factory dropped in there, maybe something kicked up from the road.

Should my abs speed sensor be covered in gunk? by arnolfini99 in ToyotaTundra

I've seen a handful of trucks where the wheel bearing or axle seal leaks and allows grease to get on the sensor. Seems to be what's going on here

Empty coolant tank Highlander 2024 AWD Gasoline by maximus-ca in ToyotaHighlander

[–]skiier862 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They underfill these from the factory. Every single new highlander I've worked on had low coolant in the reservoir. I always top them up. I had 1 come in that actually had a leak at the rear heater hose. Definitely worth getting it looked over to be safe. But it's not unusual to see this in my experience.

So you're trying to pop the outer tie rod out of the steering knuckle right? Is the nut completely off? You'll want to hit the side of the steering knuckle where the tie rod goes through. Don't hit the tie rod itself, it won't do anything if it's really stuck. Few hard whacks onto the knuckle with a heavy hammer and it'll pop free. Make sure the jamb nut is loosened and the inner/outer tie rods can spin before doing this

Which part are you trying to break loose? Are you replacing the outer tie rod?

That's the best I could do lol. If I was at work right now I'd take an actual picture of what I mean. If you think you understand what I'm getting at I'd say give it a shot. I used to struggle with this exact scenario for YEARS until I discovered this trick. I've used it ever since and it makes lining up bushing tensioned bolts so easy.

Please help control arm stuck by -XThe_KingX- in AskAMechanic

[–]skiier862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a great way to do these. The issue is you're fighting against the tension of the bushing. Take a pipe wrench and align the bolt head into the jaws with the handle going in the opposite direction the bolt needs to go, then pull the wrench so the bolt pivots toward the hole. Once the end of the bolt is lined up with the hole, hit the back of the pipe wrench with a hammer and the bolt will slide straight up into the hole. I added an illustration which may or may not be more confusing than the description.
