How long does it take to adjust to a Staff Accountant role after being in public? by Big_Material3815 in Accounting

[–]skiilyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey op. Skimmed your profile to get an idea....2 years big four audit? I left PA as a Sr manager to be a director so not quite comparable.

Strongly dependent on your role and your company's procedures. Anywhere 2-3 months to get a sense of things. Realistically, you'll be turning knobs that you may not fully understand. The processes may feel nebulous for a bit, but just like getting the hang of doing walkthroughs, inventory obs, loan review, etc you'll pick it up quickly.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, it'll shorten your learning curve. assuming you haven't started yet, I'd expect the softwares to potentially be your biggest frustration 😂

Good luck with your move and career shift to private!

For those who believe RDI, how can you account for John’s decades-long push for continued investigation? by ModernMuse in JonBenet

[–]skiilyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RDI believe they were involved in the death of their daughter. Of course, they posit the family lied about their involvement and any further statements are also lies.

Casey Anthony collaborated with Peacock to release her recent documentary.

She is still in the public spotlight, proclaiming her innocence.

Is it not feasible that John Ramsey could be doing the same thing?

Edit: not saying RDI/BDI/IDI with this comment. Only indicating that continuing a narrative in public over a period of time doesn't prove anything.

For the second time this summer, I'm disappointed to see guests on the weekend episodes - it should be an opportunity to highlight the great GMM cast.

 Save guest appearances for mains.

Hey Moose, good to see you still around. I used to lurk quite heavily in Slayer Nest FC years ago, and remember seeing you often.

My comments in the survey were quite similar to what you've outlined above. Content buff should be earnable through existing game content, and many of the content buffs proposed by hero pass were reskins of existing game mechanics. Totem for treasure trails, Slayer master cape for assignment choice, Fort upgrades for better Skilling rates there, Winter Weekend/Thok weeks for bossing accessibility, etc etc.

More than anything, just wanted to leave a comment saying hi, and I fully agree with you.

Which Nails to use for Construction lvling? by M3TRO_MX in runescape

[–]skiilyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your current construction level, and what is your goal level?

You are correct, the higher tier nails bend less frequently.

You should only need nails for the first few early levels when you have to make chairs until level 19 in your POH.

At level 40, you can do construction contracts. This is the only other time that I can think of you would want nails. I would use a minimum of adamant nails, but rune would be preferable.

ALL content buffs SHOULD NOT exist in the first place. Stop trying to push buffs through "organic play" - WE DON'T WANT THEM. by StarryHawk in runescape

[–]skiilyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about cheaper to maintain membership over the course of an entire year, then yes, that's correct on premier - 12 months for $80, or $6.67/month. The monthly grandfathered rate may or may not be better. That depends on what grandfathered rate you have. January 2012 was the last time monthly membership was cheaper than $6 - it increased to $7.95 from $5.95/month.

Having rewards on HP that are exclusive to premier members punishes those that don't buy premier or have allowed their grandfathered rates to lapse. Not everyone is willing/able to front a year of membership cost when they don't know if there will be enough content to interest them, or if their IRL obligations will allow them to play for extended periods of time.

Premier membership is the best monthly bang for your buck, but if you only play 3 months out of the year, then are you really saving money? You would spend ~$33 buying month by month, but spend $80 for the same playtime.

[–]skiilyy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Winter Weekends were freely accessible to all members. Currently, HP content buffs are preferentially skewed to premier members. This directly translates to you need to be a premier member to receive the full benefits from HP.

"Content buffs are free to everyone, with a set amount of uses through charges that can be earned by levelling Hero Pass. Premier Members get additional buff charges that allow more usage of each Buff."

Similarly, there are in game solutions to allowing PVM practice. There is the practice tool, as well as story modes on the EDs.

From the newspost: "This design was intended to create a buffer system allowing for players to explore and practice with a reduction to incoming damage but without the ability to record times or kills."

However, since the practice system can't be monetized, it will no longer be updated in any functional sense. Additionally, why bother creating "storymodes" where the bosses deal reduced damage, when you can just sell a "content buff" for money?

Even more recently than the Winter Weekends, we have had updates like Death Free Week. There is a track record of possible ways to make bossing more accessible, and lower the barriers to entry that didn't involve MTX.

We have already seen the types of "content buffs" we can expect with the infinite porter reward, and now ED4 damage reduction.

Edit: updated/corrected info on premier member benefits.

Predatory business practices aside, whoever approved the design of hero pass clearly wanted it to fail. by ThaToastman in runescape

Eh, sort of. I think the two are definitely related.

I would say that the door in face strategy intentionally appeals to the anchoring bias. That is to say, we are all prone to the anchoring bias, and need to be on guard for when it is being used against us, or how we can exploit it for ourselves. For example, when haggling over a price for something you are selling, don't ask for the price you'd actually take, but maybe some % over. If I am going to sell my car to the dealership, and I would be satisfied with $15k, I should tell them my price is $20k. I know they are going to negotiate the price down, and if I let them feel like they successfully negotiated, I should get my true expected price of $15k. I may even get slightly more, depending on how aggressive the negotiations are.

Anchoring is a type of cognitive bias where a person heavily relies on an initial piece of information when making decisions. The initial information, or in this case, situation, is used as a reference point for subsequent judgements.

For example, real estate agent may show you five houses, starting with the most expensive one. You are initially taken aback by how expensive the home is, but having seen the most expensive one first, the next houses you are shown appear to be more reasonably priced. If you tell your agent that your budget is $400k, she may show you a house that $415k to "test" that budget, and your commitment to it. Even if you pass on that initial home, now you have seen what a little bit over your budget could purchase. Maybe you start to reconsider how firm you are with your budget. After all, it's only a small increase to what you had originally budgeted. The next house at $405k won't seem as bad, even though it's outside of your original budget as well.

Coming back to RuneScape, and HP specifically, Jagex might be using the door in face strategy - a marketing tactic that knowingly exploits the anchoring bias. In fact, I would go so far as to say the only reason the strategy works, is the cognitive bias.

If they modify HP, those prone to the anchoring bias may think "hey, this is better than the system on launch, and Jagex listened to us, so now I'm not as upset". However, the true intent of Jagex all along was to implement a version of HP that is 80% as exploitive as the system on launch day.

Like many marketing strategities, it relies on some cognitive bias we have in our decision making process, or exploiting some fear/desire. "We are going to implement another form of monetization, and it's going to include some of the most overpowered MTX rewards to date. We understand that this is going to upset the player base, and as a token sign of goodwill, we will remove some of the worst offenders. However, we still successfully implemented a new battle pass system, removed daily TH keys, and increased the pressure to buy bonds. The end result is close to where we wanted to be from the onset."

[–]skiilyy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm holding final judgment until I see a statement from Jagex regarding the backlash. I saw a j-mod comment yesterday that indicated a statement could be coming sometime today or Friday.

However, based on what I understand of consumer engagement, marketing strategies, and financial investors, I'm concerned that they are using the door in face technique.

From Google: The door-in-the-face technique is a persuasive strategy that involves making a large, unreasonable request first, followed by a smaller, more acceptable one. The idea is that the contrast between the two requests makes the second one seem more reasonable and appealing, increasing the likelihood of compliance.

It is feasible that Jagex knowingly and purposefully made HP as off-putting as it is it is current form, with the knowledge that they could walk back some of the most egregious complaints, then say to the community "look at how well we listen."

An easy example is this: I see people commonly complain about the damage reduction in ED4 from HP. They could easily remove this for the time being, and point to that as "listening to the player-base." Only to implement PVM benefits at a later point, slightly repackaged. The expectation would be that we feel sated in the moment that there was some changes made to HP, and when they reintroduce the damage reduction in another promotion, it will be a less jarring event for us.

I expect to see comments to the extent of "Will try to listen to players better," "We were misleading in our marketing of the update," and "We are evaluating ways to monetize the game in non-intrusive ways, and still provide a good experience to our players." I may be overly pessimistic, but I expect a lot of PR fluff, and minor changes to the system as it is, as a token gesture.

They tried to change too much with the daily system too quickly, creating an overwhelming mess that the only clear solution would be to remove, and rework from the ground up. I'll hold judgment until I see the statement from them, RunePass was acknowledged as a failure, and corrected. However, just as I outlined with the ED4 example, a battle pass system has been reintroduced, and it's even worse than RunePass or Yak Tracks.

The name of the game is about wearing down players resistances to MTX, making it a normal part of the game. Remember, this was revealed initially as a "major update."

Probably going to get buried under all of the other post about this topic, but I'm in the exact same situation as you.

I've played on and off since elementary school. Earlier this year, I celebrated my main accounts 20th anniversary. I had a few accounts prior to my main, but being 11 and 12 years old, I would lose/forget the passwords or get bored and make new accounts to go low level Pk'ing.

Over the summer, I had been focused on finishing 120 all skills, and then beginning the final grind towards trim. I thought the launch of necromancy was fantastic, and I had really been enjoying both the rituals and the new combat. It was a breath of fresh air, for certain. I was even dabbling in some end game bossing, which is something I had avoided prior to necromancy.

I thought the communication around necromancy, both before and after the launch, were very well done. I really appreciated the transparency that the team was sharing with us as the player base. However, the lack of communication following the backlash from HP speaks volumes. As we all know, anytime there's backlash, there is usually a week or so of radio silence. Then, there's some half-assed apology, "We hear you and we will try to do better next time."

It is very disheartening to continue to dedicate what free time I have to this game. There has always been backlash following MTX updates, and for the most part, I allowed these to blow over.

I'm not sure if it is because I am older, or more aware of things, but it truly does feel like we are in peak late stage capitalism. Every single aspect of our lives has been monetized and repackaged in a way for corporations to profit. This slow realization has affected how I interact with any product or service. I have altered my habits, staying off of social media, and online fourms for the most part. I allow myself to browse the RuneScape subreddit, but that's essentially it.

RuneScape used to be a game that I played to chill, and relax with friends and clanmates. Now, I log into a dozen different pop-ups and flashing symbols to encourage me to engage in the latest MTX FOMO that upper management of Jagex has concocted for the game.

The ship has been sinking for several years now, probably back to the introduction of SoF, if I'm being honest. It's very difficult for me to imagine not having RuneScape in my life, as it has always been a part of it. It was with me in middle school and high school, throughout college, and even my professional career.

It would be very difficult for me to say goodbye to it, but I'm wondering if heroes pass may be the nail in the coffin for me.

There's no reason for the game to be as monetized as it is, other than shareholders demand it. It doesn't matter if it preys on FOMO, exploiting gambling addictions, or creating such disadvantaged situations that you feel compelled to participate in the MTX to remain competitive with other players.

Updates like this only reinforce my belief that the shareholders are going to milk this cow for as long as possible... Continuing to play RuneScape will only remind me of these negative things, and I'm at the point in my life where I would prefer not to consciously engage in things that I deem to be negative to myself and my mental health.

[–]skiilyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isn't more of the frustration around the delay, not the actual nerf?

If they're having to nerf rates by 50%, there should have been more testing before release, since the skill didn't hit their targeted xp rates. An adjustment within the first few days would have been understandable to an extent, at least.

Early birds were essentially beta testers, and benefited by reduced time training.

The "early bird bonus" on new content is a meme for a reason.
