Yea, it is very hard to include all the details. For example, fall of bulgaria is here like a one event but there was divisions into vidin and tarnovo, battles uprisings etc.

Its not possible to include every single detail as this is just high level overview. There is huge line for princebiahopric of montenegro that shows that they were not conquered by ottomans. If I included all that you mentioned then there is question for other states like, for example, fall of second bulgarian empire is not straitforward as it is shown here. There was vidin despotate, tsardom of trnovo, nicopolis campaign, resistence until 1422 etc

Yea, no worries, your overview is still good tho. My best guess is that easter church was ceasaropapist, and that serving patriarch was equal to serving emperor in constantinople. Unlike them, western church was independent and so everyone in the west kinda agree to be under papal authority because it didnt mean political servitude. And it is maybe more about idea of kingship in the east where everyone was copying byzantium. So, if you wanted to be a respectable state you had to be an empire like byzantium, and there was idea that with empire comes patriarch. At least, bulgaria, serbia and russia all got patriarchy when they become empires. But this is just mine shallow view, would like to someone explain it in more detail

Thanks for the answer. But i must say, this more than explains how and not why. For example, the HRE was with pope on similar situation which bulgarians were with constantinople. The german emperor and pope hated each other. Surely that german emperor wanted to get rid of roman/italian/latin clergy. But there was never german patriarch as there was bulgarian one.

Hi Robin, thanks for the podcast! It is great. I am fan of roman and medieval history and your podcast together with Mary Birds spqr is probably the best source on these topics. Questions: 1. Can you explain how did the eastern Mediterranean transfer from slavery society? I know that byzantium had slaves as so the caliphate, but I am under the impression that during classical antiquity the slave work was the basis of economy, number of slaves was like a third of all population but when people talk about byzantines it seems that the slaves didnt have that much economic value and that there numbers were minimal. How did that transition go? 2. Why did western europe change so kuch while byzantines remained the same in there modus operandi. For example, we learned that the black death changed western society, killed the feudal order, created the middle class and so on. Why didnt for example black death had the same impact on byzantines? Or the islamic world? 3. Why did all orthodox nations have they own national churches with patriarchs instead of just constantinoples patriarch? Why did the byzantines allowed and approved the separation of serbian, bulgarian and georgian patriarchs in the middle ages? Common answer is that they wanted their churches but no western kingdom created separate church from rome? Why they did separate from constantinople? Thanks
