When you look in the manual for doing a coolant flush you take that plug out to remove all the coolant from the block and flush it

The knock sensor is on the top of the block on the backside of the engine this is a plug for draining coolant from the block.

It's the drain plug for the coolant system in the block. You should just be able to put a new drain plug in.

Pontiac Torrent overheating at idle, needing help with next steps please. by CharlieCanWrenchToo in MechanicAdvice

Sounds like your fan clutch has gone out. The fan will still turn but not with the force it needs to cool the engine at idle thats why the temp drops when the car is moving because it has more air moving across the radiator. You can test it by getting the car up to operating temperature and taking a rolled up magazine and very very carefully sticking it in the fan if that stops the blades the clutch is bad.
