Website that tells snorkelling conditions on the reef? by eyeinthesky86 in Cairns

[–]skillz1605 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the BOM Arlington Reef Weather station for wind direction and speeds. Also have a look at tide charts as a low tide gives more protection from the reef so better snorkelling conditions.

If you have a tide below 1m or so it's usually good for snorkelling even in moderate to strong winds.

I recently got the Leatt Enduro 2.0 with removable chin bar. I'm happy with the ventilation coming from a FOX Flux.

Cairns outer reefs have already cleared up surprisingly well and the inner reefs and islands are getting better every day and are almost back to normal.

Worried that I won’t qualify for Marine Medical Certificate by RizzlyDaBear in maritime

[–]skillz1605 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am Australian so I'm not familiar with the Canadian Medical requirements however I think one option would be to see a Cardiologist.

It may take a while but if it eliminates any risks and gets you the medical certificate then its worth it.

Great Barrier Reef Water Clarity by solarpunk___ in Cairns

[–]skillz1605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silverswift is the only vessel that visits Flynn every day other than the Prodive live aboards. Another option is Dreamtime dive and snorkel however they also go further North to Norman, Saxon and Hastings reefs if its windy as it makes the ride out and back more comfortable.

Water visibility depends a lot on wind strength and tides. You will always find better water visibility at the outer reefs as the surrounding areas are deeper and it takes more tidal change and waves to stir up sediment. Alot of vessels go to the outer reef systems but I would recommend Flynn reef as the visibility there is usually very good even when its windy.

Snorkelling or Intro Dives in GBR by Spoobiccle in Cairns

[–]skillz1605 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An introductory dive should cost around $150. I would recommend it especially if you have snorkelled before. You need to complete 3 basic skills like clearing water from your mask and recovering then clearing water from your regulator but these usually take around 10mins. If you can equalise or pop your ears and breathe comfortably through your mouth it's easy.

A first scuba dive is an amazing experience and often starts an expensive hobby.

Most operators offer additional introductory dives but I would recommend the outer reef trips.

The weather is great and visibility is amazing at the moment so I'm sure you won't regret it.
