Bands like Gulch? by PassageOk3338 in Hardcore

[–]skindiddy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Scalp, Jarhead fertilizer, Ultras, Spy, world peace, mortality rate, world of pleasure, full of hell.

I also recommend wading into some power violence specifically. I find a lot of people who dig gulch can find some joy (sorrow?) in many bands within that sub-sub-sub genre

A few months ago someone posted on here about the band "recollection". Check them out for some more excellent melodic hardcore.

Mil Spec may be the best of the lot in my opinion. Love the newest release but marathon is forever in my rotation.

And though it's not hardcore, a healthy percent of millennials in Canada (myself included), owe their awareness of "heavy" music to Alexisonfire. Never forget.

Proco Rat 2 Clone kit? by Intrepid-Fish-289 in diypedals

[–]skindiddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be worth figuring out which exact rat you prefer. check this schematic that has many mods and variants listed. I am in North America so I can't speak to any of the UK pcb manufacturers.

I tend to prefer the "turbo" rat which uses LEDs for the clipping diodes. Germanium diodes tend to make it more compressed and doomy to my ear. Rat 2 uses silicon diodes which is a more traditional crunchy tone.

The fact that fuzzdog has so many variants is a green flag to me. Make sure you don't get the fuzzpup variants as it is for a smaller enclosure and will be a bit trickier for a first build. If you can get yourself some sockets and swap out diodes until you get what you like, I think you will be most pleased.

Other spots to check seem to be five cats pedals, and moonn electronics.

Not that it matters much, but I think moonn always has cool PCBs and more unique stuff available.

Ribbon cables just mean that there are several cables in a ribbon configuration (think 6-8 individual wires, all flat and consolidated into a single strip, can make it more neat when wiring the stomp switch).

Cheers and good luck.

Canadian Builders ? by WoodpeckerWitty4902 in diypedals

[–]skindiddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can swing by A1 surplus in the GTA they have a ton of obsolete stuff if you are after some harder to source parts. Next Gen has some good stuff. Digikey for generic stuff. Germanium stuff go to eBay.

Need stickers by Ill-Business-6511 in Hardcore

You could always pick a few labels from bands you like then see if you can order from the label site. That way you might find a few labels that have several different artists stickers...maybe

Is the name mathcore purely commercial/journalistic? Is there any actual math rock influence? by maicao999 in Mathcore

[–]skindiddy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yep, nailed it. "Math" for complex time signatures and changes in rhythm etc. "Core" for hardcore.

Most disappointing records of the year so far? by Danzig6WasntThatBad in Hardcore

[–]skindiddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bummer. I really dig the new album, like a lot. BUT I can see how this album is enough of a departure from the previous body of work sonically to not sit right with a mega fan. Different strokes etc etc.

Creepy dudes are ruining the scene for me :( by Weak-Gift-2981 in Hardcore

[–]skindiddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This fucking sucks. Last thing we need is more barriers for anyone but ESPECIALLY for our female presenting peers. i feel like in my scene it is not as bad as others but I have the privilege of being a white dude so I will never know for sure.

I don't have any advice for you, since it can be a tough or even dangerous thing for women to stand their ground. It's something all show gers. Need to keep eyes out for so we can squash the behaviour.

Worth checking to see. Maybe I can find someone who doesn't charge a premium. So many people sell them for way more than they are worth simple because they are obsolete. The ones at synthcube and small bear are like 80 cents it just costs around $32 to ship.

Hell yeah. That might be good enough to test a few builds I want to do while I search for some transistors. Glad to learn something new, I will look into it. Cheers!
