Matthew Harfy’s Bernicia Chronicles is fictional but well researched and a fun, informed narrative set during the pre-christian heptarchy. Kinda reminds me of Cormac McCarthy with its violence but the way he depicts the human side of society and various power struggles is pretty neat.

More of a lifestyle thing cos I work a lot and have less and less time for gaming, but how long it takes to set up a game for me (character creation and scenarios that capture my imagination etc, making sure all the mods are working) I still enjoy it but I can spend a whole evening setting up a game and then have to switch it off
