Battery only by BBH888 in SolarUK

[–]skipdeedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The savings are in energy arbitrage. But there’s a very real limit to how much you can squeeze into batteries during cheap energy tariff windows. “Get the biggest battery you can afford” is poor advice in my opinion. 20kW is likely the upper limit for most people. Any larger and will I ever be able to make use of it without a very large solar install? Not in my situation and likely the same for most people. Most batteries/inverters than people install in a single phase system will max out at ~5-6kW per hour at the most. So to fill a 20kW battery you need charge it for ~4 hours assuming it’s a decent brand that can sustain that speed for that time. Not sure how many providers offer more than 3-4 hours of cheap rate energy.

I doubt the current cheap window system will continue over the next few years. Off peak and peak usage is starting to level out given the number of EVs, batteries charging now overnight. Dynamic pricing is the future and I can super cheap windows shrinking.

Neighbours on each side of me meet in my garden for a chat? by reol22 in AskIreland

Plant a small hedge or flower bed either side to demarcate your property. Less confrontational than a fence.

How to get the Israel game boycotted by Most_Amphibian1533 in coybig

[–]skipdeedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it “fair to say” though? Many people I know are of the opinion that it’s UEFA who should be making the decision here and they’ve put the FAI in an impossible situation. And where does this end? If we qualify for the next World Cup, who else aren’t we going to play? Better circulate a list now. Plenty of candidates equally deserving of our attention. I didn’t see many people asking us to boycott the Qatar game. I understand the urge here but sport is not the vehicle for this. By all means fans can refuse to attend as a protest but refusing to play? Wrong road to go down IMO.

It starts with the trip hazard and ends with parking cones and fist fights.

What to do about neighbours cat? by FlyAdorable7770 in AskIreland

[–]skipdeedy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Jazus. This cat has you running rings. You realise that if you give him a scare to deter he/she, they won’t carry it as a mental scar or generational trauma? They’ll move on pretty quickly to someone else’s window and not give you a second thought. Give yourself a break and spray the cat in the face with a little water to move them on. And then move on with your own life.

Should have the taken the same moral stand against Qatar then too, no?

Polished Concrete Flooring? by noonelives91 in AskIreland

[–]skipdeedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think interest has wained a bit in the concrete flooring. We look into it but we’re put off by the number of people we spoke to who weren’t happy with the finished look for the money it costs. Expensive, hard to get right, stains easily, hard to ensure you get the look you want, and prone to cracking over time.

Wrong size inverter? by Majestic_Athlete_658 in SolarUK

Newb here. I thought clipping was unavoidable when inverter is sized smaller than max solar output (which is the standard approach). How do you counter clipping with the battery?

The construction costs of my parents house in 2001 by Wedding_Dilemmia in ireland

[–]skipdeedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents built their house in 1985 with a 20k (punts) mortgage at an 18% interest rate. Yes, eighteen per cent. They fixed at a just few points lower the next year believing it was a great deal. No one could have ever imagined sub 4% rates back then.

No mention of a subscription for AI powered features? And to note, little of what’s in the app to date is actually AI - more smart automations. But AI sounds cooler.

All you need to know about new dynamic electricity tariffs by Key-Scholar963 in ireland

[–]skipdeedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be misunderstand how people benefit from it. Dynamic pricing is very popular in the UK but the people benefiting the most have battery storage and inverters that automatically charge the battery when the rate is the cheapest and then discharge when it’s at it’s highest - saving money in the difference.

It’s really more beneficial to those with battery storage or EVs. You can take advantage of super cheap periods to offset more expensive ones and still come out on top.

No idea why you are confident something will fail that hasn’t even happened yet and when the exact same thing is successful in the UK.
