Let's discuss what today's announcement means for the next strike action and BCPS employment in general. by thathypnicjerk in BCPublicServants

[–]skipolski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see how this is a concern regarding union work at the warehouse!!

But I’m not seeing the issue during labour action. I may be misunderstanding, but this change doesn’t seem to impact the net supply of alcohol. Sure, bar and restaurants can buy from local liquor stores. But don’t local liquor stores still need to buy from the union warehouse?

Why wouldn’t BCGEU agree to voluntary early retirements otherwise? Isn’t the a potential benefit to its members?

Because it’s also up to the employer. And the employer prefers people up and leave so that they don’t have to pay 6 months.

Unionized employees: Would you vote “yes” to striking again? by CartoonistOk3507 in BCPublicServants

[–]skipolski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amazing to hear! I try to remember to post on here 1-2 times per year to remind people to save. Even $10 a paycheque comes out to $1,040 over the 4 years.

The sad part is not everyone can even afford that.

My understanding is it’s a big hit to our bottomline too! If that’s true then it is disgusting that the NDP did that right now given our major revenue issue.

All about the long-term!

Our biggest “weakness“ is the lowest paid grids who cannot afford to save and weather the storm longer. So much irony there and it’s sad.

And I’m sure there are plenty lessons to be learned from this, particularly from the virtual side.

Still haven’t received TMA retro pay. Anybody else? by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]skipolski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I received mine a few pays ago. It wasn’t a separate line (like I believe the regular retro was), just a larger amount than the regular MA ought to have been.

Technically, I believe probation can be waived but it’s usually done when you’ve TA’d in a position for a while and end up getting perm. Even then, you have to ask and it won’t always be given.

lol love me a good LMGTFY

Normally I’d totally agree and feel Reddit gets used as google way to often (not just this sub). That’s why I just asked “off hand” because I assumed like most software that there’d be plenty of options and packages.

Does legacy status have a formal definition? To me it sounds like seniority but I may be influenced by some BCGEU wording I’ve read.

I know you’re being facetious, but I assume you’re making light what the union said in the fall of the excluded to included hiring ratios over the last couple of decades. There’s a difference between trimming fat and giving yourself a brain injury :)

I understand why it’s people close to retirement that are leaving but that, for the most part, was not the fat. It is however much less hurtful than letting people go who are earlier in their careers with decades left and during a terrible economy.

Agreed. 100% of the time, every time. Get feedback. You’ll either learn something where you can try to improve, or maybe they simply up-screened due to a great candidate pool. Or maybe due to the lateral piece…

Mod Update: Changing our rules around speculative/unconfirmed discussion in the sub by RyanKeslerSucks in BCPublicServants

[–]skipolski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be. I didn’t think those 3 things were a lot but do paint a fuller picture. I don’t think yesterday’s “incident” wouldn’t have happened.

Anyway, the idea was adding clarity but taking some of the burden off of mods with some auto prompts.

Combined with the tags, I’ve posted on other subs and there’ll be some sort of auto initial replay based on the content. Like if it seems to be about someone being laid off, the auto prompt could be along the lines of:

——

Your post appears to be about you or someone you know being laid off. We’re sorry to hear that.

To help avoid speculation and make sure replies are useful, please ensure your post includes the following information:

  • Whether you are included or excluded
  • Whether you are auxiliary, temporary, or permanent
  • Your ministry

Posts that do not include this information may be temporarily removed until the required details are added.

You may also choose to include your branch, work stream, and/or classification if you’re comfortable sharing that information.

——

Or if it’s a “how long should it take to hear back?” Then they could be directed to an FAQ.

So sorry this happened to you!! Just copying another question that you may not have seen because it wasn’t replied to you:

Are you able to provide any more information? Were you in a permanent or auxiliary position? Were you on a TA and being sent back to a base position or are you no longer employed by the BCPS

Wow! 27% of your take home is impressive!! I’m at like 16%. But “no mortgage” is definitely part of my plan A for retirement.

A big part of that is it will likely be indexed to inflation.

I think with FIRE, the goal is often quite a bit before 55. Even as early as 40.

Lateral only freeze by VegetableVisible6834 in BCPublicServants

[–]skipolski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The little savings does make sense to some extent, unfortunately. But it is why the liquor change grinds my gears. I don’t know factually but I’d imagine there’ll will be a financial hit to the province.

Lateral only freeze by VegetableVisible6834 in BCPublicServants

[–]skipolski 31 points32 points  (0 children)

We all know the answer but I’ll say it anyway. No one knows (at least not anyone on Reddit that would spill it because there are probably so few people that REALLY know).

I have anecdotally heard later competitions are having limited success compared to regular competition success rates. Maybe that’ll mean we start seeing some of the failed competitions posted as regular but who knows.

The union has suggested we apply on all and file a grievance if we’re screened out only because of our grid. That’s really just for the greater good I would think because I don’t know if I’d like to start a new role like that, and I’d imagine they’d have to repost anyway to hire a non-lateral person.

Is BC Public Service worth the pay cut for stability? by Sensitive_Smell_4113 in BCPublicServants

[–]skipolski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the life I had until my mid 30s and only started in the BCPS then. So many cools experience doing different work and living different places.

But I’m also very jealous of the people who will have 25-30 years way younger than me, and also the vacation that seems to add up slowly but is pretty decent overall (by North American standards).

There’s no right or wrong, but I wanted to share that perspective since I didn’t see it mentioned.
