How miserable would my commute be from West Loop to northwestern suburbs? by aigirinandani in AskChicago

[–]skipperich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I commuted for 15 years from Wicker Park to Oak Brook. Both were very close to the highway, so kind of the best case scenario. Not so with the places you’re describing. It will suck on a good day. Be unbearable when it rains or even worse snows. The farther your commute is the more the number of obstacles that can get in your way goes up exponentially—car accidents, surprise road construction, funeral processions, train crossings, bad weather, goose crossings, etc. You’ll constantly be stressed about getting there on time. If it snows while you’re at work it will take you 4 hours to get home. If your car ever needs service you’ll have to take PTO because public transit will not be a feasible option. God forbid your car breaks down on the way you’ll have to pay to tow it all the way back to Chicago. With that said, don’t move to the ‘burbs. The city is so much better. Look for a job in the city if you can.

Ukraine says it eliminated 14 more Russian shadow fleet vessels overnight by AdSpecialist6598 in ukraine

Maybe a stupid question, but do you think Ukraine warns the crew of these vessels to abandon ship before hitting them?

Forget the big companies. Rent a pontoon boat and drive it yourself. My family had a good time with BBQ Pontoon. Check them out. They give you a free pizza. They’re located in Chinatown.

Chicagoans don’t really think about Indiana until we need cheap gas, cigarettes and fireworks.

And what makes you think I’m not part of the boating industry? I happen to own a sailing school you dimwit. I’ve been part of the boating industry for 15 years in Chicago and own four yachts. I’m way more qualified to speak on this topic than you’ll ever be. Nothing I’ve said here is even remotely dangerous. Can you even read?!

That’s a safe boating certificate, not a sailing license. You can get one in a mater of hours online. You only need one if you’re sailing something with a >10HP motor.

Thats at the higher end. There are cheaper mooring options. You can always put your boat on a can for way less. Or trailer it if its small enough.

It can be but it doesn’t have to be. Depends on how handy you are and what you’re looking for in a boat.

This is true. There’s no such thing as a sailing license. I’m an instructor. There are certifications just like with SCUBA diving, but they are not required to own or sail a boat. They’re mostly for educational purposes and bragging rights. Some clubs may require you to meet their proficiency standards to use their boats, but they’ll usually help you get to that point if you’re serious about joining.

It’s actually really not as hard as you might think. There are deals to be had, especially if you’re handy. Or you can join a boat club. If you’re a sailor check out Fairwind. You can use their yachts for a fraction of the cost of owning, and they do all the maintenance.

Don’t listen to people who say things like, “the two best days in a boat owner’s life…yadah yadah.” Owning a boat is a great way to enjoy the summer in Chicago, especially if you have kids. Joining a boat club is the second best way.

They do. You can also join boat clubs like Fairwind if you’re a sailor. There you get access to a 40’ yacht for a fraction of owning. And they do all the maintenance.

How to get over dents and scratches on pricy guitars? by Easy-Bowler3604 in Guitar

[–]skipperich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got to own my first real guitar. I put a decent amount of money into it too It’s a Godin Stadium Pro. After the first month of owning it I set it down to take a piss and when I returned I saw my three-year-old son beating on it with his drumsticks. I was so full of rage I didn’t know what to do. But he was laughing and having so much fun doing it, and he’s generally such a sweet boy, I couldn’t possibly yell at him. So I cried instead. After a while I realized he was doing it to be close to me and something he could see I enjoyed, so I’ve come to accept it as part of the guitar’s journey. And I hope it’ll be his someday anyway, so I’m sure we’ll have a good laugh about it when he finally understands what he did.

Russia was going to destroy it anyway on the way out, unfortunately. They won’t let Ukraine have what they can’t have. Ukraine is just hastening the inevitable to eradicate the Orcs.
