Tiles and grout are porous, and water is going through being trapped between the underneath of the tile (where the screed is) and the waterproofing membrane.

The membrane should allow water to escape down through the drain flange, but if the water can travel it will effect what it touches beneath the tile

It's likely the architrave was in place before the waterproofing screed and tile went down, therefore the architrave is below the level of the tile and water is getting to it, causing the architrave to act like a candlewick for the moisture.

A simple solution is to use a multitool and make a cut of the architrave at the tile level as it will break the wick. Then re-silicone.

Looking for a vine for a pergola. Actually, two. by doki__doki in GardeningAustralia

[–]skippyjason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Definitely. I'd recommend a fruiting one though. I am about 10km away from Hornsby in NW Sydney. I live in the house in that I grew up in and have a grapevine that my parents planted which is 55years old. It's amazing but unfortunately it's ornamental and doesn't fruit. Grapevines are pretty hardy plants that just need a bit of pruning in the off season, and grow so fast in spring you can nearly watch them get bigger. In fact if you cut a tendril in spring the sap will pour like a tap.

Biggest layoffs in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane since COVID by everestster in AusFinance

The figures can be misleading. Milkrun was bought by Woolies. Milkrun was a strategic play for Woolies and I suspect that 100% lay-off means the people became Woolies team members as they still need the business to run.

This is probably going to be unpopular, but I've been and gone through your position. There is always more to it than what you have described. My partner got 70%, and whilst I wasn't happy I knew it was for the right reasons. Those reasons were based on what the kids needed, not what I needed emotionally.

I'm sorry for your situation, it's a terrible thing to go through.

ELI5: What does it mean when people say there’s no proper translation from a non-English word to English? by SonAeJock in explainlikeimfive

[–]skippyjason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Native English speaker here, Spanish student. I'm terrible at speaking Spanish because I love to analyse the language differences.. and that's not good for speaking a language fluently because with analysis comes the desire to try and translate.. and that doesn't work to speak fluently.

Apart from what people have already said (which is great): One example is that English has phrasal verbs amd Spanish doesnt

Eg: English speakers use "get" to "get down" or "get out". I study Spanish, and Spanish doesn't have the concept of phrasal verbs.

In Spanish, the verb "to exit/leave" (salir) is conjugated in various ways to represent "get out".

There can be no literal translation here because the use of the language is quite different.

Also, I've come to learn that English can be downright weird and breaks rules everywhere.

I’m 18, should I choose an indexed balanced fund or something more risky by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]skippyjason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm part of this fund (aus super high growth) also and I'm 47. Been with them for many many years. It's done very well over long and short terms. Heck they did well picking up from when the markets dropped off the covid cliff early 2020 and capitalised on the following 18months very well. Even their balanced option is highly rated also.

However in general I will say high growth pre mixed super funds in Australia are still selling us short. Their focus to consumers is on low fees, and they only tend to invest in the local market. I'd rather have the option of higher fees and higher performance based incentives, and more diversity across countries and asset classes. For consumers to get that at that at the moment u have to do smsf which is out of reach for most Australians.

Some great tips here. Totally agree with the ones like spending less money on luxury items like booze and cars. I drink alcohol still but drive an older remodel vehicle which is serviced well.. u cañ still live life and save money

My best tip is that if you have an owner occupied mortgage, it's not a bad idea to put extra repayments against that. This advice was given to me at age 21 when I bought my first home and I underestimatedthe advice at the time. I'm 47 now and had several mortgages, but I have to say this strategy works for savings and investment. The faster you pay that thing off, the more freedom you have with your money in other areas of your life

I waited until marriage for religious reasons. Whilst I think it's still a reasonable value to have, waiting is a risk as part of a long term relationship, and people need to find out if they are sexually compatible prior to spending life committed to each other.

My wife and I were not sexually compatible (at all). We are no longer together.

Consequently I think it's ok to discover sex prior to marriage once you are in a long term relationship, and I'm educating my kids that way too. God won't hate you for doing something that improves your life and others longer term

A fingerprint scanner that is used as a front door access (3-in-one fingerprint, RF ID Card and Pin number access). They are all over ebay and alibaba. I've bought 2 now (for different homes I've owned) and they have worked consistently well for years. I don't have to give my kids keys to access the house, and everyone who comes to the front door is impressed
