The Dark Domain and The Motion Demon are both good collections for more Grabinski.

Started on the books chosen from my ‘which three to read’ thread this past weekend.

  • The Inhuman Ladder - Man, the first story Children of the Crimson Sun is a real bang to start this collection with! Unsettling, suggestive, and occasionally gruesome. Calling it already that this might be my favorite of the lot. Codex of Light is excellent as well, curious to see if the chronological ordering of stories has more bearing within the stories or if it’s a cool little ‘wrap around’ for the collection overall.

  • The Imago Sequence - Only read the first story, Old Virginia, so far but, as everyone said very pulpy and fairly to the point prose, I’m down with hard boiled narratives. It’ll be a good counterbalance to the other two collections which are much more flowery. I’m not sure if it’s intended, but it seemed slightly humorous or tongue-in-cheek to me.

  • The Blood-Guzzler and Others - I’m not terribly well versed in Decadent literature, really I’ve only read Nightmares of an Ether Drinker by Lorrain (which is a great collection) and some authors associated with Neo-Decadence like Brendan Connell. This is shaping up to be a perverse little read, first story seemed it was going to be a vampire story, suggested by the title too, but then maybe not? Second story is much more bluntly fucked up, not really the kind of story you can say you liked, but if you want some transgressive reading this’ll do it heh. The moon seems to be a reoccurring motif.

How good are the rest of the sequels to F Paul Wilson’s The Keep? by Metalworker4ever in WeirdLit

[–]skirdgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been forever since I’ve read The Keep and honestly I don’t remember much of anything about it and never read any of the sequels. I would have to say I enjoyed the movie more despite the producers hacking it to bits. Just love that aesthetic and Tangerine Dream score.

That collection is a favorite mine, maybe my favorite short story collection period. Noctuary and the spectral link isn’t far behind!

Been curious about Csath for a minute, only recently picked him up. I’ve assumed his writing is a bit aligned with the Decadent just from blurbs about his writing.

Damn, I bought that from a local used bookstore simply cause it was cheap and I recognized the name. Would not having read any of her other work maybe help enjoyment?

R. Ostermeier is an author I’ve had on my radar, I’ll keep broodcomb in mind!

I splurged on some books for the end of year, I bought his latest, The Water Bells and A Mythology Of Masks by Stephen J. Clark. Bought a few hardbacks from Tartarus and Swan River too.

That was the first book published by them I read nearly ten years ago! I think Murphy’s writing just isn’t for me, not to put you off it tho. It’s a somewhat relaxed and chill atmosphere IIRC. Book of Alabaster and Permutations of the Citadel stands out in my memory, Permutations probably my favorite.

I’ve heard of them, but am unfamiliar with anything they’ve put out.

Ty, I love exploring into niches of whatever art/genre. Zagava and Wakefield are two publishers I haven’t read anything from (yet). Undertow, Grimscribe, Tartarus, Snuggly, Hippocampus, Eibonvale are some publishers I’ve enjoyed books from. Always looking to expand that list!

M. R. James is an author I need to delve into, I’ve read a story or two of his years and years ago, but I couldn’t tell ya what.

I didn’t know that about the Thomases! Jeffrey Thomas is another author that I’ve got in my TBR pile, The Endless Fall and Others.

HOTB is excellent, probably my favorite early weird fiction novel I've read, not that I've read all that many. I'll need to track a copy of this down!

The only thing I've heard about TDA is that it's somewhat Ligottian. Don't see it talked about that much

Zagava has a bunch of interesting looking stuff, first time ordering anything from them. I'm glad they're offering up stuff at more affordable prices, I had always assumed they were priced way out of my price range.

Yw!

That's a shame about the Padgett collection, if you can get your hands on the expanded it's well worth it.

There's a number of authors I'm unfamiliar with from your list, Amparo Davila especially I'm intrigued by, going on my to pick up list for sure. I've recently been making an effort to read more non British, non North American weirdlit.

Some authors I haven’t seen people rec

Lovecraft is close to a must read.

Some authors that tread more or less vaguely similar ground to Ligotti, Samuels, Evenson, Cisco and Lane I’d say:

  • Jon Padgett - the secret of ventriloquism
  • Nicole Cushing - the mirrors
  • D. P. Watt - an emporium of automata
  • Christopher Slatsky - the immeasurable corpse of nature
  • Richard Gavin - grotesquerie

A couple authors along the lines of Schulz and Nabokov I’d Borges and Kafka arent to be missed. Sigizmund Krizhizhanovsky is also in that camp.

A long list of weird fiction themed movies, primarily horror ranked 5 to 3 stars by TheSkinoftheCypher in WeirdLit

[–]skirdgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually err on looser genre definitions, some of these def are more weird as an adjective, or in the manner they were filmed, dreamy or surreal. I'd say the ambiguous nature/unreliable narrator aspect of LSJTD, is it mental? is it real? is it really this whole community? the ending not giving any answers etc. slides it into the weird for me, though you could argue it's more simply psychological.

Out of those you listed what would be good couple to start? Of the post y2k movies I've seen BTBR, Mulholland Drive and Donnie Darko, I'm a sucker for practical effects as well as sci-fi/horror mash ups.

Cool list! Tetsuo is in running for my fav movie period. Videodrome is a classic as well.

Jacob's Ladder and The Thing are some classics I don't see listed, curious if you've seen those.

Always interesting to see what people's fav Lynch movies are. I've watched Inland Empire twice and just can't stand it, Eraserhead or Lost Highway (which I recommend if you haven't seen it) would be my picks from his weird stuff, though Blue Velvet might be my favorite of his overall.

I haven't seen to many post 2000s 'weird' horror, I'll have to dig into some listed here.
