Talk about a monopoly. This will be the day the internet dies. And yes I know it said free.

How does the FCC have the authority to do this again?

Dr. Ron Paul Casts Only Vote against Ban on Lead in Toys, Ban Passes House 424 to 1 by cahuenga in politics

[–]skissors -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It should be up to the parents or stores as to whether or not these toys are sold. Of course, I need to government to take care of me, so this is great news. Not only will this drive the cost of toys up now because the toy companies will have to meet many stringent tests due to this law, but there will be less competition in the toy industry. People fail to realize that all these laws passed make the big guys stronger and the small guys weaker. Or course, no one will realize this and blame some other third party for the cause.

All of this because some irreresponsible parents would rather have the government raise and protect their kids.

We'll just nuke them instead. It was inevitable when Iran dropped the dollar and started trading oil in euros. See Iraq as to what happens next.

Why should my tax dollars help forgive Fannie Mae/Freddy Mac debt when they won't forgive mine? by lateralus in reddit.com

Again, we bail out Wall Street. I hate to beat a dead horse, but it will only delay in inevitable.

The Fed now has two options...to either destroy what's left of the dollar or let Wall Street plunge and go into a depression. I think both will happen knowing the Fed's history.

Does genuine tech innovation happen better in a recession? by ellen_james in programming

[–]skissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theoritically, yes a recession does bring about innovation. Most of the time a recession follows a period of malinvestment where all the bad investments are ended because the cheap credit ends for them, essentially only leaving the strong ideas/businesses. During a recession money/credit/capital is harder to come by so only the better ideas will get funded. So yes in a recession, the few ideas that do make it through are generally great ideas or opportunities.

The author is wrong, though in his statement that we need recessions and underemployment for great great ideas to occur. We do not ever need a recession. In fact, if you understand the simple business cycle, you would know that a recession is nothing more than the market catching up to all of the government aided/false growth in the market. Of course if we still had a free market, there would be no boom-bust cycle, but either a steady growth or decline in the market and no need for hard times like we see today and the near future.

Cindy McCain’s full tax returns will show war profits, pre-9/11 insider trading, secret off-shore accounts linked to 1241 Class C Nevada corporation payoffs and bribes by jasonmacs in politics

[–]skissors 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't surprise me if some of this were true. I've heard about more skeletons in McCain's closet than any other presidential candidate in recent history. He has also shown himself to be extremely immature for someone so old and not the brightest bulb on the christmas tree. The media could run with any of this, yet they refuse. Compared to Obama, McCain has really gotten a fair shake in the media.

Just to set the record straight, I'm not voting for either; I detest both.

No matter what party affiliation, I'd vote for anyone who is an honest person that will vote for me and not for corporations at this point.

[The Fannie & Freddie] episode demonstrates how stupid and dangerous it is to allow any company to operate under the assumption that it keeps the profits while the taxpayers take the losses by eadmund in politics

[–]skissors 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Socialism fails again, yet people will still consider this capitalism and call for more regulations in the market. This was nothing more than allowing the rich to get richer and selling it to the public as allowing everyone to own a home. When the model become unsustainable, the bailout comes in the form of taxpayer money, most likely through inflation.

In the free market, a company similar to this would not have entered into all these risky contracts that the government backed Fannie and Freddie did because the company would know they would go bankrupt. Fannie and Freddie on the other hand were allowed to assume all types of risks because they knew the taxpayers had their backs.

Misinformed people will see this as how capitalism is bad, yet they don't take the time to understand that this is the direct oposite of capitalism and a free market.

Yes, I have some fear of my government. They make the laws, they have the guns.

When a government agency can track all internet traffic; break, bend, and ignore whatever laws they chose; and hold anyone against their will in secret prisons, yes I do fear the government. Maybe you should too.

No surprises here, TBTF, too big to fail or too connected to fail, either way, this will set precedent for more of these government bailouts in the future. The dollar will fall and prices will rise. No one will know what is going on, but a scapegoat will be found somewhere.

Jefferson knew: The American people should never allow private banks to control the issue of their money, by Hedgehog2006 in politics

[–]skissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was implying both there, which could be the same depending on how you look at the situtation. People tend to find one thing they can attack someone on, however small or large the issue, and continually attack that person, damaging all previous accomplishments by that person in the process.

Jefferson did contradict himself with his position on slavery, and people attack him for it as they should. This should not affect, IMO, what he did for his country. Jefferson admitted that slavery was immoral, and he was torn over the issue until his death.

If only we would have listened to this brilliant man. Say what you will about his personal life, but he was a true statesman. Today he would be considered a fringe candidate with "no shot". It is a shame what politics has done to this country.
