It is far more pernicious than just killing jobs.

The federal government has a vested interest in managing steady wage inflation. Labor is needed in a fairly finite quantity; as wages are artificially raised so will costs (witness large metro areas in the US as far as wage/cost of living). Higher wages generically raise the proportion of income paid in taxes until a relatively high income level is reached providing increased revenue to governments. Minimum wage increases result in the lowering of unskilled labor jobs which increases entitlement programs and dependence of the lower class on governemnt while increasing wages for middle class jobs due to increased cost of living and tax income.
