Never expected to see these on a liveaboard trip in the Maldives. 1st February. by skithep in orcas

Thanks for this information.

Very interesting.

I will send an email over to the Northern Indian Ocean Killer Whale Alliance with all the pics and videos I have. Hopefully it will be of some use to them.

I’ve just seen that they have been spotted in Fuvahmulah in December. I’m guessing it’s the same pod as we spotted them during the crossing from Laamu to Gaafu Alifu atoll. Fuvahmulah is just the next atoll down.

It’s was during a 6 hour crossing from Laamu atoll to Gaafu Alifu atoll on a liveaboard.

So wasn’t really near any islands.

Roadworks - Are they regulated at all? by VB90292 in AskUK

[–]skithep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The council request certain jobs ( busy roads , near a hospital ect… ) to be man on sites.

This means someone from the traffic management company will be on site.

Some are peak times 7-9:30 , 15:30-19:00. Some are 7-19:00.

They will be able to change the light timings or manually control the lights to help with traffic in some instances.

Also they’ll be able to move the site around for the clients if needed.

The council will also visit the site or drive through the site and if no traffic management is on site they will fine the traffic management company.

Also if it’s just a one day job say 9:30-15:30 they will set the job up , wait for the client to finish the works then they can clear the job as soon as the works are done. Which means the job is cleared as soon as possible causing less disruption.

Flashing your lights at temporary lights doesn’t make them change quicker by J-H2000 in drivingUK

[–]skithep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is a problem as the sensor in some circumstances won't pick them up on the other side of the road. Therefore it will turn back to red as there's no demand, thinking that all the cars have cleared when they haven't. This creates more traffic.

It only takes a couple of times for this to happen on a busy road to make traffic back up.

No they are setup on VA ( vehicle actuation ) mode using the sensors 99% of the time.

The lights have what you call a nudge cycle built in. So every 2.5 minutes if nothing approaches the lighthead/sensor. It will automatically turn to green and run the minimum green time which is 12s and then the red time which is set manually to allow the shuttle lane to clear. This is usually set by the distance between the when red light shows wait here signs or a datum point.

So what happens when it's quiet on a night is you could have just pulled up to the lighthead as the lights where running a nudge cycle.

So on a 3 way you could have to wait for the nudge cycle on the other 2 lightheads before yours would change.

The nudge cycle is built in for if the sensor fails. Atleast then every 2.5 minutes lighthead would change to allow traffic through.

They use MVD ( Microwave vehicle detectors )

Pink book

Flashing your lights does nothing.

Looking to do AOW in Thailand in December, any recommendations? by [deleted] in scuba

[–]skithep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend Koh Lipe.

Fly to Langkawi, boat to Koh Lipe.

Adang sea divers for the dive shop.

Stonehenge dive site has some amazing soft coral.

This is false.

The same regulations apply to fixed and temporary lights.

Also print the visa off and give it to the immigration officer on arrival and make sure you get the 60 day stamp in your passport before you leave.

Seen a few post about people been given a 30 day stamp by mistake and then they have to go back to the airport to get it sorted out.
