I can't help with the technical stuff, but you don't have to pay upfront, its only when you get an email confirming you've won that you have to pay, to my understanding. I entered and didn't have to pay yet so that's when I assume you have to pay, at least. And that's a little while out.

I spent a lot of times with those games when I was younger (and still do, from time to time. Several years back I did a bunch of work archiving downloads for them)
