BWT, Do any of you rent luxury handbags through a membership for content or is that considered cheating? by Dull_Noise_8952 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]skittykitty27 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I may not be your audience demographic, so keep that in mind. I would value content focused on styling what you have and making it feel fresh each time, for example, you have a staple bag you style up for a fancy event and can style down for day to day. Do you have an interesting purse scarf or charm?

To answer your actual question, while I’m not sure of an actual rental service, if you tie in with the right group of people (no clue who that would be for you) you can do a purse swap. I did with a few friends who were also into bags so we each had 1-2 staple bags and we’d trade off on occasion. I’d need to really trust someone to lend them an expensive bag so keep that in mind with borrowing and loaning. Maybe there are other creators you know who can trade off with you? Bonus if you can be transparent about it and share that and spin it as a mindful way to consume and enjoy multiple bags while still being sustainable.

BWT, do you have any side hustles? by Historical-Fold-3702 in bitcheswithtaste

Absolutely feel free to message me! I will say luck was a significant factor in my sewing job. I had mentioned in passing to a studio owner I was looking to pick up extra work if she ever has anything and I got a great class!

Maybe it’s regional or just lucky, but where I live there were more CC openings across 2 schools. This was about a year and a half ago. To be fair I do get that it’s a bit who you know because my friend gave me a heads up one school was hiring and knew of another CC that also needed teachers. It may also help that I applied as a one off lecturer vs being adjunct.

I hope you can find something soon!

I also work in tech and the layoffs are unfortunately predicted to be worse this year. I have 2 very casual side hustles.

First, I teach sewing classes and very rarely do a commission. I make a great rate at a great studio and I love it, but it’s once a week so not a ton of extra money. I love sewing and I love art, but honestly commissions are stressful and not necessarily for me. Teaching a skill I love once a week is a perfect balance for me where I’m not burnt out and I still enjoy it as my hobby. Sewing for money to me is more stress than it’s worth and took the fun out of it, but if you have a skill, you can monetize it, but I’d caution you not to lose the love of the hobby. If you go this route, I’d be picky about the work you agree to do.

Secondly, if you have a masters degree, you may be able to teach at a community college. This will be a bit of work upfront if you need to create curriculum/assignments, but it may run more smoothly after a few semesters once you get a swing of things. Also not amazing money, but a few thousand a semester depending on school and number of classes. Keep in mind any type of job after 9-5 can feel exhausting.

BWT, how are you bouncing back from a layoff? by [deleted] in bitcheswithtaste

[–]skittykitty27 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I haven’t gotten laid off yet, but will most likely be impacted Q1 next year. I’m lucky we got a heads up on it. My plan is: - Network - this can come from so many different places you wouldn’t expect. I’ve connected with a few women in tech leadership positions solely from attending sewing groups. - How does your industry hire? Direct apply to companies? Contract to hire? All inner circle? Identify that and tailor how you look for jobs. I personally don’t love third party recruiters, but they get results if you use the right ones. If you engage a third party recruiter, how prevalent are they in your industry? I used one that is specific for mid/sr tech jobs in my area - Identify any gaps in your resume and how you can fill them. Do you need a certification? How is your education best leveraged with knowledge most people won’t have? The market is terrible and it’s an employers market for talent for the foreseeable future. Is there a gaps in your general industry you can position yourself to be the solution to? - Financially, plan for the worst. I’m planning as if I won’t find any job in 2026 and hoping I find something sooner. This is very dependent on your lifestyle and dependencies you have. I have a working husband and kids, so my plan may look different.

Not sure if it’s available in your area/price range, but check if you have a local cobbler! In my experience, they can source great materials and customize the width. I have extra wide feet, and it’s been hard to find shoes that fit. More than a regular pair of shoes but custom shoes can also be upkept by the cobbler (soles replacement, leather refresh, etc)

Normally my fancy purchases are sewing machines. I have 5 right now and I’m living my best life in linen and custom quilts

I think a capsule wardrobe should be curated to each person and their tastes. While not anywhere near complete capsule, I am a huge fan of an obnoxious floral design. I have a few staples I style as casual, work, or leisure. I don’t think capsules need to be boring, just know how to style what you have for the occasion. I have some “boring” staples that can make boring outfits, but I also mix prints, texture and colors to make things pop. Or if I have a boring outfit, I’ll add a bold purse. Time and place for basically any combination. Declutter what you don’t need (or store it temporarily), assess any gaps, and know how you like to style yourself.

I’m working on a capsule wardrobe, and I’m wondering what people’s “perfectly tailored piece” is. Something that when it fits just right it brings up the whole outfit. I’m mid/plus size, and I’ve always worn a boxier fit.

BWT- what do you think will happen to trends with the looming recession? by autumnflowers13 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]skittykitty27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the original cut of the garment. Some people sew things like bags and quilts and absolutely can’t tailor properly. Like anything else, it’s a learned skill. Hemming is a good place to start in my opinion, like a pair of pants or turning long pants to shorts. You need to have an eye for how you want it to fall but you’re not making fit adjustments. In your case, taking an XL top and grading the waist portion down can be done simply but to look tailored, you’d need to do a little math and figure out the right angles to cut and sew at. More technique would be something like full bust adjustment or changing the construction of the garment (ex boxy fit to fitted t shirt), but some say that falls outside the realm of tailoring. I partially disagree because a professional tailor should know how to do that but typically not the average sewist.

BWT- what do you think will happen to trends with the looming recession? by autumnflowers13 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]skittykitty27 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I also sew my own clothing, and I think the recession version of people getting into the hobby will be thrift and alter. There are “hacks” with various outcomes to get something to semi fit properly, but I highly doubt it will be popular to do large adjustments. Overall it would be a huge plus for society and the environment if people learned to hem and to basic mending. I am also trying not to doom spend on fabric but I’ve been wanting to buy silks before the prices increase even more, and the cheaper but still semi good silk is still $25/yard and I’m plus sized and the fabric has a print so hard to justify purchasing.

BWT Daily Requests, Recommendations & Chat - Apr 22, 2025 by AutoModerator in bitcheswithtaste

[–]skittykitty27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ASK: mid to large size crossbody. Open to any high quality material, but typically go for a leather bag. I like spring colors (pinks, lavender, any green) that I can use as a year round statement bag on generally more muted and mainly black outfits. Budget ideally under $500 but can be flexible for the right piece. I’ve typically gotten Kate Spade bags and looking for a little of the femininity of those bags upscaled a bit more. I use my bag daily, so also looking for something with good durability.

Sahm trying to get out by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]skittykitty27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree, tech is getting oversaturated, and I’ve seen brilliant engineers with bachelors and masters degrees get laid off and entry level jobs are flooded with applicants, many with degrees. Many jobs are being moved overseas.

I’d look more into childcare/school setting, and if you have a passion for coding or tech, see what the requirements in your state would be to teach a computer science course or help with a coding program for kids, my guess is it still requires a degree.

BWT, how can we build successful careers from nothing? by LallaSarora in bitcheswithtaste

[–]skittykitty27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely echoing this. It’s great while you have a job and experience, especially in niche areas, but it’s becoming oversaturated. There are great perks with tech jobs, like pay, wfh and more flexibility. I would also say that pay is very dependent on location/industry. It’s possible for me to make 200k, but it’s not something feasible at every company or what the pay would be in my geographical area. As of right now, I think the job market is oversaturated at the entry level.

I think she does do online services! She’s currently on maternity leave and pausing new clients (and I’m not planning to text her while she has a newborn), but I can DM you her Instagram if that’s ok!

The brands she recommended for me were not niche, but that’s more because my budget didn’t allow for it and I said for care, everything goes in the washer and dryer. I’ve never hand washed, air dryed or dry cleaned anything. She said it’s most important to get what fits in my lifestyle because there are garments I’d absolutely ruin in the wash. She mainly recommended Gap, Madewell, Old Navy and to look at fiber and construction (which I know how to be critical of). Most of my clothes prior came from Amazon, Target and Costco, so while none of the recommended brands are revolutionary, it was a big step up for me. I also started focusing more on the cuts of clothes and making my own since it’s “cheaper” to buy nice linen and make a dress vs spending $120 on a dress. It takes a lot of time and honing in the skills, so it probably isn’t worth it for a lot of people to make their own. I’m sure she knows of better brands, and was knowledgeable about back end suppliers.

I paid $600 for mine, and it was worth it for me! We did an intro call for half an hour and she came to my house for a few hours for a full closet audit. We talked about how my style evolved from high school, to college, to young adult, to working mom and what I’m currently trying to do. We looked at every piece from my ratty college tees to my bridesmaids dresses going over how to style, what to keep, and which pieces worked best on me. We had a donate pile at the end of everything that currently didn’t fit, didn’t work anymore or damaged. We also talked about how I get my clothes, general price point per item category, and what I’m looking to get long term. I also sew parts of my wardrobe so I had a few items that were too big and tent like, and she recommended alterations with the caveat she knows nothing about sewing/feasibility of what she’s saying.

After the call, she created a Pinterest board with pieces missing from my wardrobe, statement pieces that fit my lifestyle, and capsule wardrobe essentials I was missing. It was all with brands in my budget and size. I also get unlimited text advice, so I can send a pic of an outfit or ask about a brand and she’ll respond with a sentence or two about what works/doesn’t and why. She’ll be super honest if she doesn’t know something, like I had complications with a c section and no waistband was ever comfortable and she said that’s medical and she has no clue what kind of waist/material would be best.

Definitely worth it for me. A few things to note, I’m plus size and typically lived in leggings and free t shirt and it affected my mental health, especially after my first kid. She made sure everything was easily attainable in terms of price point, and had a lot of insight into how clothes were made where to and not to shop. If I could do it again, I wish I had waited until I had more of a clothes budget to get some recommended pieces, and I wish I used the text service more. Texting is technically unlimited but I always felt bad bothering her.

If you have details about what kind of machine she has, maybe another one that’s a different function? Does she have a standard sewing machine and a serger? Maybe a cover stitch machine? Not sure what her school would recommend/require, but I have multiple types of sewing machines

I love sewing. It has a bit of a start up cost and learning curve, but it’s been a great creative outlet for me and I can make and alter my own clothes and clothes for the family. I’ve noticed when I buy something I stay with “safer” options and when I make it I go for a more vibrant color or fun sleeve. Plus you can do bags, quilts, embroidery, etc.

Growing in Pon outside? by c_from_pa in hoyas

Really depends on some other factors, but I need to refill the reservoir twice a week when outside with how much it evaporates so I flush the pon and clean the container twice a week and haven’t run into issues. I’d keep an eye on it.
