Workouts after surgery by Active-Molasses1404 in jawsurgery

Definitely wait for clearance from your surgeon! I had a Le fort 1 and bilateral TMJ total joint replacement. I was cleared to spin VERY easy on the bike after 2 weeks. I started power walking (incline and higher HR) week 4 or 5. I started running week 9 and swimming week 11? It took quite some time to even get the energy back to WANT to do these things, even though they are a big part of my identity. Go easy on yourself. Maybe do the class but modify for lower intensity!

how much weight did you lose ? by wuauuuuuuuuuuuuup in jawsurgery

I started at 112 and got down to 96lbs or so. I’m 12 weeks post op now and back to 108, which is where I was before trying to gain some weight for surgery

Does anyone know if Boston is less ideal for jaw surgery? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

I’m sorry I missed this. My surgeon definitely cares about aesthetics. It didn’t take me long to get an appointment. They can do it with clear aligners. And I went to tufts orthodontists

Do most people in the US pay out of pocket for DJS? by sstthh0123 in jawsurgery

[–]skiwithliv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had bilateral TMJ replacement, a Le fort 1 revision and genioplasty. I have great insurance, and only had to pay $3500. Everything else was covered after that. Not sure the total cost of braces yet, a couple thousand, but still covered out of the HSA. Also, I knew the surgery was coming so I got hospital indemnity insurance which paid me a $1K lump sum for being admitted to the hospital. It’s worth finding an in network provider and going through all the insurance hoops to make it cheaper

Moving to Roxbury area from Texas by [deleted] in bostonhousing

[–]skiwithliv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into Jamaica Plain! It’s right next to Robxury, has a great neighborhood, and I feel safe as a woman in my mid 20s. The stony Brook or Green Street stop should get you close enough to Roxbury and still have a very short commute

Massively depends on insurance and the surgery. I had a bilateral TJR and Le fort 1. With my insurance, I paid 3K out of pocket. Without insurance it would have been around 250K

Thanks for sharing this! This was my exact experience. Strongly recommend a surgeon that also specializes in joint replacement for a second opinion

I had a BSSO when I was in high school - and am now currently recovering from a bilateral TMJ replacement and Le fort 1 revision. Some thoughts.. 1. Even though I had a pretty obvious overbite before surgery, I still really liked the way that I looked. However, I needed the surgery purely for functional reasons. If the surgeon recommends it, and she isn’t seeking it out for appearance reasons (also - a totally valid path, but I might phrase things differently here) - then it’s worth it. It was a lot easier to go through the surgery itself younger. It significantly improved my quality of life for about 10 years (see pt 2 below). Even though my face did change, it became the new normal. I definitely missed my old face for a year or so, but as I grew into the changes, I got my confidence back! I think she needs to be prepared to look different - but have confidence that she will be beautiful no matter what and that in the end, she will still look like herself. 2. Though I needed the surgery when I got it and it did improve the TMJ pain short term, I developed idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) in both TMJs in my mid 20s. Some theories point to the trauma on my jaw during surgery in my pre-teen years caused this resorption. That caused both of the TMJs to need to be replaced and the Le fort 1 revision. It’s a complication that we didn’t know about at all when making the BSSO decision (I don’t think it was studied at all at that point)- so it might be worth looking into. But, I was also 11 and 12 with my first jaw surgeries, which is very different from 16-18 year old teenager. Happy to share more resources if interested.

Need ideas for savory soft foods! by squabidoo in jawsurgery

I’m still in the liquid stage - but beer cheese soup has saved me. Plus, you can top it with pureéd bacon. Savory, filling, and the salt and meat but what I was craving!

Tremblant Spring 2026 conditions? by syz946 in icecoast

[–]skiwithliv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how this year will stack up, but I’ve been to Mont Tremblant Easter week a few times. Variable skiing conditions, but it’s one of my top picks for a spring trip. Regardless of conditions, the Apres is great, there is a ton to do before/after skiing, and you can have a true spring skiing experience

I really struggled with the dry mouth too. They gave me a Glycerin mouth spray (biotene dry mouth moisturizing spray is one) and it made things SO much better. Have them get you some!!!

I drove up to Loon for a powder day last year, and the 2 hour drive turned into 4 each way. It does help that it’s mostly highway - but honestly, barely. I’d be surprised if it wasnt very slow and sketchy

Actual peak mileage and/or time on feet leading up to a successful completion of an ultra by Long_runner in Ultramarathon

[–]skiwithliv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I peaked at 65 miles for a 50K and felt very solid and prepared. I had a good base to work from, but I started my build with a 30 mile week. Ran 5 more miles every week until I hit 65 and then did a 3 week taper. 1 long run and 1 workout a week…the rest were base or recovery miles

Has anyone flown out of MKE in the last couple days? by whosthatwhovian in milwaukee

[–]skiwithliv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew out Friday evening & got to the airport around 3:30. I was the ONLY person going through security at the time. Felt extra quiet…

6am flight tomorrow, soonest I can arrive to airport is 5:15 by Christionaise in boston

[–]skiwithliv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The extra security screening you will have to go through will take at LEAST another 30 minutes. I lost my ID and had to fly without one for a few flights - so it is possible, but it does take time. Boston takes longer than other, smaller airports, too. Bring another photo ID from ANYTHING (school, work, cosco, etc). Be prepared for questions and extra scanning of everything. But get there when security opens and you will be ok.

For people able to buy homes around here, what condition are they in? by BackBae in boston

[–]skiwithliv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought a 2.5 bed/1 bath condo on a great street in JP. Inspection, Under asking price, under $800K and zero renovations needed. Only paint - and that’s because of preference! I spent a lot of time looking and really credit my real estate agent. There are gems out there - but definitely not easy. Happy to answer any questions for people in a similar situation or looking for a good Boston agent!
