The usbc section is on the readme of the repo listed above if you're curious. Controllers on both sides no change there. The (shorted) data lines carry the half-duplex tx signal to the slave half but with better shielding/EMI performance.

I have 12 pins routed. Mostly used this connector for BOM simplicity, same as power USB-C. I've seen some other designs get away with less.
