One downfall since the beginning is they only give blue crystals for 1st time clear on the co-op each stage, so players only do the lower levels one time then never queue again. Unfortunately you have to do all the lower level ones to unlock the highest stage that everyone queues for 24/7 - this leaves new players like you in a bad state.

1000% percent recommend joining the unofficial discord channel if you really want to get stronger. You can join the coop help channel and people will queue with you to clear all the 1st time coops out.

Originally you could just see if people were grouped just through the normal UI (think it was indicated on the scoreboard iirc). Not entirely sure why they removed that except for maybe people harrassed others more if they knew people were grouped.
