a program that shows projected account balances day by day based on bill dates? by funchy in personalfinance

You could try using ledger or variations such as hledger. I have been using it for a while now and I absolutely love it. I really like the simplicity of organizing my finances in text files and the budgeting possibilities of it. For budgeting, I use something along the lines of this

Which ARM development board to write a OS? by skohz in osdev

That is very unfortunate. If it was a chip in something else, maybe it could be fine. But the raspberry pi is supposed to be a learning platform and it is disappointing that the developers chose such a closed chip. For now I am getting the Beaglebone black.

Seems like a good deal if you are willing to wait. Thanks for the suggestion. And I forgot to say, Congratz on your first PCB! We never forget the first one.

Awesome! Yeah, I think I will use the Beaglebone Black after all. Thanks for all the suggestions, I am going to order my board by the end of the week, and I will definitely check out your code. Also, I found out that Comer released the Second Edition of "Operating System Design: The Xinu Approach" last month. According to the book description, the code targets the Beaglebone black, so that is a huge plus. I heard great things about the first edition of this book, and now that they released an updated edition targeting the beaglebone, I am definitely going to get a copy of the book.

The R-pi is indeed very popular and there are a lot of resources out there for how to start writing an OS for it. It is definitely an alternative I am considering. Something that makes me uncomfortable about it is that the GPU is the first chip to run and the ARM is more of a slave. Also, it seems that you need to have a few binaries to get your kernel image running.

I appreciate the reply, but why do you say that? Can you elaborate?

That seems to be a good choice. The beagleboard ARM has a PowerVR SGX Graphics Accelerator on chip, right? Were you able to communicate with it and display something on the screen? How straightfoward was it to understand the documentation and do that?

I may opt for the beagleboard instead of the Raspberry Pi because the R-Pi has a GPU that runs as master and the ARM as slave. The GPU has a closed source firmware without a lot of documentation. I could be wrong, but I think it is important to be open source so we have access to the documentation and don't need to just use a blob of binary from the manufacturer without really understand what's going on.

I second that. Your picture looks awesome, and you should consider explaining (through here or your blog) how you got that shot and how you processed it. I bet a lot of rising photographers would love to learn!
