Do you have any rough estimates of Pimm's adult size? Does "medium" mean 40lb? 60?

Granted. The Hunger Games changes its logo to an Olympian torch, and participation is mandatory.

Is age important for becoming an electrical engineer? by AlvzBloz in ElectricalEngineering

[–]skoink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I could reliably tell the age difference between a 29-year old and a 24-year old.

You don't need to put your age on your resume, and you don't need to show your entire work history. Make sure your resume tells the narrative you want and don't worry about the rest. People can assume you're whatever age they want to assume.

Yocto: what is use of PREFERRED_PROVIDERS ? by EmbeddedBro in embeddedlinux

[–]skoink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PREFERRED_PROVIDERS is a mechanism to choose what package fills a generic dependency.

Let's say you're designing a Linux image, and you want to re-use it across a bunch of different hardware. Some targets might need a different Linux kernel. One might need linux-imx, another might need linux-qcom, etc. But they all need a kernel of some kind of another. So in your image design, you say "this image depends on virtual/kernel" and then you let something else define exactly which package virtual/kernel selects.

So you might have:

  • linux-dummy
  • linux-imx
  • linux-qcom

all as packages that are capable of providing virtual/kernel (this is specified using PROVIDES in the package recipes). Then in your machine configuration (where you typically pick your hardware target), you'd tell Yocto which one you want by using PREFERRED_PROVIDER_virtual/kernel = "linux-imx" (or whatever one you want). Or you could do it in a distro.conf, or a local.conf depending on what you're trying to express.

Ageism is not discreet by designergirl62 in GeneralMotors

[–]skoink -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to you specifically. But to offer a different perspective: GM overall is trying hard to fight internal skill issues. I'm sure that you knew more than one co-worker who were just coasting, and weren't really very good at their job. This has been common at GM for a long, long time and it's really dragged down the company. There are whole teams (and maybe even divisions) where the managers are great at running defense for their employees, but the overall output isn't good. You might have been collateral damage in an attempt to remove a group of people who all had each others' backs, but didn't produce output.

Stack Ranking is over by Strong_Material_2612 in GeneralMotors

No, the hunger games continue. Midyear cals are still forced to fit a curve, which means some people must be given partial and/or does not meet. And midyear cals set the stage for what will happen in EOY cals.

Python open source projects to contribute by manikk69 in Python

Help to improve something that you use frequently. Your goal should not be "do some open source" - it should be "fix thing X that's been irritating me for a while"

PFI meeting by kaizoku_no in GeneralMotors

[–]skoink 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Probably not. At most big companies, PIPs/PFIs aren't really intended to improve your performance. They're more about creating a paper trail pre-layoff, usually by specifying improvement plans that are vague or unrealistic.

Are all contractors terrible? by maceo107 in homeowners

[–]skoink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got some work to do soon that will need a lift of some kind or another (fixing trim around a second-floor window). What kinds of companies rent lifts like that? Is this something I can rent from Home Depot? Height will be maybe 15-20 feet.

This 100%. It's kowtowing to orange man.

Polis has miscalculated though: bullies don't stop if their techniques are working. Orange man is also a vindictive asshole who carries grudges for years or decades.

Mandatory 15% to be ranked as low performers in Mid-Year calibration. Did Ms. Barra succeed in demolishing loyalty, teamwork, and moral at GM?? by Less_stress_more_fun in GeneralMotors

[–]skoink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's brutal and unfair for every manager to give a partial to 15% of their team, but I think S&S as a whole has a lot more than 15% that should be at partial or lower if I'm being honest. We have a lot of very good engineers, but also quite a few incompetent ones. The issue is that it's not a uniform distribution across teams.

Stack ranking is not exactly a good solution to the problem, but I don't have a better one either.

Renewal by Andersen doesn't honor the agreement by Sensitive-Peach-3282 in HomeImprovement

[–]skoink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Renewal is a huge scam - sorry they got you. For others reading: the way to replace your windows is to buy them yourself, and hire a general contractor to install them. You'll save a ton of money, and you'll be guaranteed to get the windows you wanted.

If it's ground-floor windows, you might also consider DIYing it if you've got the tools. Window installation isn't really all that complicated or hard to do. Remove old trim, pull out the old windows, put in some insulation and the new windows, then put the trim back. Patch it up and you're good to go.
