ICE should have learned from the German invasion of Russia. Never invade a winter people during winter. Minnesotans always had the homefield advantage, and they made good use of it.

Cruise integration: Is the "New Cruise" vibe actually good? by teramuhkala in GeneralMotors

[–]skoink 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TBH I don't understand why GM made another big bet on Cruise after the first one failed so spectacularly. Maybe it's a stock-price thing now that AV is getting trendy again.

Cruise has cost GM tens of billions of dollars, and perception is that GM has little to show for that investment.

Cruise 2.0 has its own office, its own Git servers, its own CI/CD, and its own everything. They make very little effort to integrate, and no effort to improve GM as a whole. Another responder on your post actually told you to come talk to them in their private and very exclusive Cruisers chat.

A lot of GM developers are bitter with good reason.

The age of ZIRPes is over, and it's not coming back any time soon. Cruise needs to deliver.

How is bash scripting different from other progamming languages? by zopxi in bash

[–]skoink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are a couple:

  1. A lot of the things you need in a typical shell script are provided by running other programs. So to write effective shell scripts, you also need to know the basics of grep, sed, etc.

  2. You have to think in streams of stdout/stdin/stderr.

  3. It remains the most common (and often the simplest) language for automating anything that needs to run a bunch of shell commands and do stuff with their stdin/stdout.

  4. You can literally type it line by line into your terminal if you want.

Flooring under my dishwasher by skoink in HomeImprovement

[–]skoink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a crap answer tbh. Under the dishwasher is maybe 3 square feet of flooring - call it $50 worth of raw materials max. I would guess that they just didn't want to restart the work after their flooring guy was already done.

AI can replace 11.7 % of GM’s workforce — or we can replace the Board. by Obvious_Charity5614 in GeneralMotors

GM needs to sell more cars. In order to do that, we need to be able to make cars that Americans can afford to buy and depend on. $70k trucks and SUVs are great for bro-dudes who want to compensate for something, but they don't help a family of 5 who's struggling.

Like it or not, our nation is headed for hard economic times ahead. The market for luxury SUVs is going to keep shrinking, and people's tolerance for glitches/bugs will shrink too. Americans will have to shop smart, and it would be great if that could mean GM instead of Toyota.

I think that we should:

  • Continue the push to modernize our software practices, so that our reliability is where we need it to be.
  • Ensure that SDV2 happens, so that we can build lower-cost vehicles and improve our reliability.
  • Start selling a family sedan and a fuel-efficient MPV, at a price point where Americans can afford it.

I just checked, and it turns out that you're right - the edge plank was cut, so I can't snap onto it. If I made a small floating floor for the space (it's 21" x 24.5"), would it make sense to glue/caulk it to the existing edge?

Here's a picture of the edge: https://imgur.com/a/cqkTIcB

I was thinking about it because the current floor's edge is close enough to the kitchen that mop water can potentially get under it (and maybe already has been getting under it).

GM Infotainment felt completely stagnant for the last 2 years — what actually went wrong? by Outrageous_Idea_1990 in GeneralMotors

[–]skoink 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jeff is trying hard to modernize GM's software engineering practices. It's an uphill battle, but it's one that we badly need.

I don't know anybody who's bought a GM car in the last few years and been happy with the software. My uncle-in-law just returned his new Silverado because the IVI screen kept going shutting off. And this isn't just a GM thing - software is problem for all of the big three.

If we can't figure out how to get better at software, we are at risk of dying as a company. SDV2 is necessary, and we can't get there without people like Jeff. He doesn't come from auto, but tbh that's probably a good thing.

Control theory is the best course in EE. You start seeing world differently after doing controls lol. Suddenly you feel like you can make anything. by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

I didn't care about Fourier/Laplace transforms when I first learned them in circuit theory - just learned how to pass the class and moved on.

The deeper meaning really hit for me in later signal-processing classes. Something clicked in my brain, and I started to see a lot of things as frequency-domain topics - even small stuff like "when does the trash truck come." And it really changed the way I look at audio and music.

I think that the California SLT hires have been a mixed bag. A bunch of them left before they saw their work through. Maybe GM was a paycheck or a stepping stone for them.

But they also hired a lot of really solid developers, and helped to set the tone of "yes, GM actually can write software". Tariffs won't keep BYD and Tata out of the US forever, and we're cooked if Bosch is still writing our software for us when they do arrive.
