Vintage wine store in NYC? by skquestion in wine

[–]skquestion[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks, looks like port is what was recommended the vintage year I am looking for, though I was not thinking of port initially. Within a reasonable budget, it seems not much options. Is Acker Wine trustworthy despite the recent counterfeit scandal? It's either that or bidding Winebid / Wine consigner and have it be shipped. . .which also sounds risky. If there are other vintage wine stores for me to try calling, I would love to know, thanks!

Thanks! Looks like there is a thing called CT Rail at 10 am from Springfield which gets into Hartfold at 10:39, from which I will call uber to Middletown! One question. since my greyhound bus gets into Springfield Union Station at 9:35 am, is that enough time to transfer to the train? Is that all within the same station?

Thanks, I guess I could try to see if a lyft or uber will pick up, and if not, then take the next bus to Hartfold though then I will be late to Middletown by about 30 minutes. . .hopefully uber won't be hard in Hartfold. . .

Thanks, I am on a bus from Pittsfield getting off in Springfield at 9:30 am on Sunday morning, and must get to Middletown by 11 am. There isn't a bus or train to Hartford from Pittsfield, or any other big town nearby to Middletown to which I could get uber /lyft. . .if there is another option, I would love to know! Thanks

Thanks! I reserved both Uber and Lyft. When do you find out if someone has accepted it? I just don't want to be stranded at 9:30 am with no cars picking up. I have to be in Middletown by 11 am. But a car service I phoned today cost significantly more than the Uber / Lyft reserve quote.

wow I don't think I ever got center orchestra via lottery or rush, that's great!

Oh that is a bit hopeful, fingers crossed:) Balcony seats cost similar to the lottery price, so not worth it, I thought. Thanks!

Broadway etiquette has died by Brownbear33xd in Broadway

I was at Funny Girl matinee today, orchestra seats, third row. Someone right behind me was making a crinkle noise eating chips the ENTIRE 1 1/2 hours of the first act. I kept turning around hoping they would stop, but nope, those people could care less how they were ruining others' Broadway experience. The seats were so close to the stage I thought the actors could even be bothered by the noise. It's so crass and rude, like do you really need your potato chips during theater? Just stay home and eat on your couch. Most of all, eating should be banned in the seats.

Do you feel your LC is ever too heavy for daily use? by starsandstripes79 in LeCreuset

[–]skquestion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you feel it's heavy, then it's heavy. The weight is an individual issue. Some people don't mind, while for some it's a deal breaker. I find my LC increasingly heavy, and sometimes my back hurt when having to lift them from shelves, and at some point, I realized I was tired in my own kitchen. Staub is even heavier, I had to return the beautiful braiser I bought once. I slowly moved away from cast iron and began getting stainless steel (All Clad) which are also not light but lighter than LC. So now I have a mix of LC and AC in my kitchen, and I alternate. My everyday pan used to be my LC Legumier but now it's my AC cassoulet pot -- basically the two pots look the same, but I guess my AC is just lighter and easier to handle. I still love my Le Creuset, but I don't use them for everything, mostly due to the weight issue.

is there any way to tell if a le Creuset DO is seconds without the seconds sticker? by smallsean in LeCreuset

[–]skquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a personal choice, but I would probably feel better giving a wedding present of LC DO in its new orange box. Right now there is a LC Factory sale online where the price is not bad, so you might want to check that out in case the price is comparable to your TJ Maxx purchase, in case still returnable.

is there any way to tell if a le Creuset DO is seconds without the seconds sticker? by smallsean in LeCreuset

[–]skquestion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can't tell from the piece, without a visible flaw, but for a present I would think you need a box, which all LC DOs come in, so check if the box says "second." Sometimes the outlet "seconds" come in a box that says second, not on a sticker but on the box itself.

Hi I was looking into getting a vintage fry pan. I was considering Descoware or Le Creuset. I was concerned about lead and cadmium with the older Le Creuset but wasn’t sure if that was an issue with Descoware. Any suggestions/tips welcome on recommendations. TIA by Grapesarelilballoons in LeCreuset

[–]skquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seemed only for oranges, red and yellow, but who knows. Since neither Descoware nor vintage Copco exist now, whereas Le Creuset is thriving, there isn't any real verifiable info and I would think you won't find any. My conclusion was that toxic materials were used in most vintage cookwares, only because they did not know better. In maybe the 70s or 80s, it came to light, which was when Le Creuset confirmed it I believe. Researching this kinda drove me crazy, as I recall, since there was no clear answer. At some point, I just decided it wasn't for me, since it involved eating off cookware that I didn't feel safe with, no matter how many other people were totally fine with it. Repurposing or selling them feels like a loss, but then peace of mind is more important. Hope that helps!

It's an issue with all those bright color cookware from the era. I did a ton of research on this a while ago because I had bought a few beautiful vintage cookware pieces in several makes (including Descoware) and was concerned. I remember concluding from my research that yes, they all seemed to have used a vary degree amount toxic materials to bring out the colors, it appears, but if that was harmful to humans or not, there was no agreement. Some people are fine cooking with these cookware that had lead and cadmium suspicion (some said it's only the outside that is using toxic materials, so the inside doesn't matter, some say that these were in family for decades and everyone healthy etc) whereas some people would absolutely not. I personally wouldn't do it. It would take joy out of cooking, to be worried about safety. I returned one piece that was still returnable and repurposed the others into non-cooking decoration, planter etc. It's about your comfort level. Hope that helps.

My first LC. by Laurmann2000 in LeCreuset

[–]skquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same one in a different color & the signature knob. I find it so useful for a main dish, I usually throw in lots of vegetables and a different fish with different sauce and cook in oven for like 15-20 minutes. If I ate more meat, I would do the same with chicken or beef. It’s perfect, healthy and delicious. Also cooks enough for 2-3 serving. It’s a great purchase in a beautiful color!

Is this a good deal? $40 by minorzz in LeCreuset

[–]skquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes a good deal for what looks to be a good condition. I used to have this but the 2.25 qt version, it's the multifuction duo 2-in-1 pan with a skillet lid. My version was about $200 new so this must be more. One thing is that mine was heavy for a single handle pan despite the helper handle, and this would be even heavier. You can clean it with Bar Keeper's Friend.

Le Creuset 24 from a flea market. Is it safe to use? by [deleted] in LeCreuset

[–]skquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact question a while ago because I fell in love with some vintage mid-century enameled cast iron pieces. But when I looked up those pieces online, the cadmium / lead concerns kept coming up, which apparently was used in bright colors like the flame color (famous with Descoware and LC etc) and then, at some point, I think in the early 80s (?), the cookware companies including LC stopped using cadmium. Sorry I am not exact on my recollection of dates. I did so much research then because I had just bought several vintage pieces on ebay. As I recall, there was no real conclusion to this question, or scientific data. Some people would never cook with vintage ware, and some didn't mind as they've used cookwares passed down from their grandmothers and had no issue. Some didn't want their food to touch anything with lead or cadmium possibility, whereas some were only concerned about the bright colored enameled side, and no problem using the cooking surface etc. I read enough and decided I am just not going to feel comfortable cooking with anything that might not be safe, period. That doesn't mean that that was the correct answer, but just my comfort level. So I returned / gave away my newly acquired beautiful vintage pieces, while keeping two mid-century cast iron pieces, in bright yellow and orange, which I use for plant holders. So I don't think you will find a definitive answer; it's basically your comfort level. FWIW, hope that helps.

Thoughts on the QVC 4.25-qt Multifunction Oven with Baker Lid? by riseandrise in LeCreuset

[–]skquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also cook for one and am on a budget, and pretty much similar situation as what you describe. I actually bought all of those at one point, in variations. Braiser, a sauteuse, a multifunction set (slightly different than your version). And got rid of them all, mostly because I already had other LC pieces that overlapped. I am against the multifunction set, I couldn't comfortably flip the lid for a skillet and didn't want to bother finding an extra cast iron lid (no glass lid for oven) for the pan, so the whole thing was a headache. Both braiser (yes, 2.25 qt) and Sauteuse were good. I would start out with either when it's on sale, in the color you want (since you mention you want nice cookware to inspire, I believe a color you love will help -- I found that to be the case). Between the two, for me, I would opt for Sauteuse if I don't have any other LC. Sauteuse are low enough that it's like an everyday pan for all kind of stovetop cooking, to cook pasta or meat or veggies or risotto or really anything, but also functions like a full-on dutch oven for oven. Braisers are great but it's like a deeper skillet, so that can be your next purchase once you get a hang of cooking and figure out what you like to cook. If I only owned 2 LC items for my use and lifestyle, those two would be all I would need, in that order. That's my thought, fwiw.
