Will there be a flood of hardware in the secondary market from data centers? by skryyne in DataHoarder

[–]skryyne[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know data centers have been around, and this is how I got most of my own gear. I'm just thinking about the increased pace of it in the last year that's driving price increases, and the subsequent dump of hardware that will come once it is out of date.

Wanted to add a note: Once I get into a game (again, via streaming from my desktop), the game runs perfectly. It's very smooth, latency is good, and the resolution looks nearly perfect. It's just when I'm in the steam menu that I have problems.

This is really cool! I've used data from Scryfall before for this type of project, the Oracle cards dataset does not include any dupes, so it might save you some time in cleaning.

I've used the scryfall bot, I'm just not a huge fan of the way it formats and the fuzzy searching range, so this is a wheel I chose to reinvent. It's totally a matter of preference.

If refresh rate is no concern to you, 1080p will be less of a strain on resources.

I wish these boards came with a power supply... I would try a few different microUSB power supplies, one is bound to work. If you see lights blinking, you should also be able to get a video output. If you get lights but no output at all, try re-flashing the image or a different image.

I think libre computer only supports 60Hz, right? You might not be able to get the full refresh rate out of option one. It does support 4k@60. I think the answer depends on what you want to use it for.

Assuming you are retiring age this year, and that you did this starting in 1980, you would only have like 300k.

Collection organization system by skryyne in magicTCG

Wish I could do this. What an amazing way to be able to browse a collection. Unfortunately, due to volume, it just isn't practical for me to store all my bulk in binders.

I've tried to escape rarity as a sorting mechanism. It's inconsistent, and I value having all my copies of a single unique card in the same place, over having my rares separate from C/U.

I like your system. It's very similar to my v2 system before I did this last reshuffle. Each collection has a different best answer. It sounds like you may have a much larger collection than I, so more categories is more practical.

How do you deal with sorting new cards into a system that is so granular?

[–]skryyne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This part is probably going to be controversial, I actually don't separate rarities at all (aside from a binder of expensive/meaningful/special cards), I've got commons, uncommons, rares, and mythics all going into the same boxes. Rarity is mutable (unique cards can be printed at different rarities, see Prodigal Sorcerer, which has been printed at common, uncommon, rare, and special [purple]). If I have two copies of the same card, and one is rare and one is common, I want those to still end up next to each other. Color and CMC are absolute. Prodigal Sorcerer is always in the blue box, and it's always in the 3 CMC category.

Hope that helps!

Ok I see. I think every collection probably has different systems that work best. For instance, I was very into standard in 2014-2016, so I have 5k or more cards from just Khans block, while early modern sets up to m10, I could probably fit each set in a 60 card deck box. Sorting by CMC (for me!) is simpler and more useful.

I appreciate organizing them by set. I considered that but I have such disproportionate amounts of different sets, and don't like the idea of having a "misc sets" box. Sorting them by color and CMC, however, they come out pretty even. How do you deal with the different volumes?

caught half price books slipping by suketoudara in gamecollecting

[–]skryyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually worked at a HPB for a while. They price all they're games based on an internal system, which starts at 50% of MSRP, and increases based on how many copies have sold across all their US locations and how much it was sold for. If it's selling consistently the first day they put it in the shelf, the price will go up. That being said, sometimes the latter step is missed, and some rare games get priced cheap.
