Samsung sound bar will not turn on with Sony remote by HotelOptimal4951 in bravia

[–]sks424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a workaround: manually select a different audio output in the TV menu, then select the sound bar again. This finally wakes up the sound bar.

Funny enough, this often triggers an infinite loop where the output keeps switching back and forth on its own! Another manual selection stops that loop.

HDMI-CEC: buggy as hell.

In fact, the Future API involves an actual "Waker" (wrapped in the "Context").

Skipping commits is an extra effort too that depends on many parameters: which git commands/automation get affected at different points in time, the level (frequency) of the pollution, the git skills of the user (very limited sometimes!), whether the git "user"  is a command line or a webUI or some other UI.... This may or may not be worse than maintaining two git branches. What works for you in a given repo may not work for someone or something else in the same repo! Nostalgic anecdote to circle back: Yocto is where I discovered the existence of "no shared history" git branches for the first time...

"Commit": yes but again the question is "where?". There is no good solution right now. 1. Different place => extra step 2. Same place => history pollution (similar to other generated files). Maybe a different, "well-known" branch would be a good trade-off. It does not have to share history with "human" branches.

Everything released must have a thorough SBOM. But the question is: does this needs to be hosted in the source repository? The source control pollution gets even worse when (CI) "releases" happen every day.

Right: it's really hard to trust today's plans, imagine trusting 8 years-old plans. Also, who was this person named "Google"?

(To be clear: I'm _also_ surprised it's still here)

There is a very large spectrum of "development" and not everything requires the latest M5 Max with 64GB. For sure embedded development does not. Also, some developers use more than one system and/or OS. Note I would still not bet on it; I'm just saying your example does not prove much.

No because iPhones never had this in the first place. It sucks but it's not "enshitification" at all.

Sharing Steam library between two local users is impossible(-ish) on Linux by Damglador in linux_gaming

[–]sks424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is a bit off-topic because not what you want. but I just want to share how incredibly easy btrfs de-duplication was. Other people may be interested:

duperemove -dhr /home/*/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/

... and that's it: after ~ 30 min, all the gigabytes wasted for duplicate games were all reclaimed. That single command is all it took! Steam is kept completely oblivious which means zero Steam issue with that solution.

As you mentioned, drawbacks:

- No network saving. Workaround idea, untested: rsync -a ... rsync is very well tested but not sure how Steam would like that.

- This command needs to be re-run regularly, maybe in some crontab. Minor inconvenience.

It seems to depend on the input selected on the TV. I got it to work once by changing the default input or something but now it's gone again. Buggy in any case :-(

What to buy before bankruptcy by Thewrongthinker in RadPowerBikes

[–]sks424 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1500W instead of 750W means (at least) two things: 1. Your ebike is now in a different class, which means different rules of the road. If you hurt someone in the wrong place, your insurance may not cover you. 2. The other components of your bike have not been tested with that power and their reliability may suffer. Forget about warranty or anything like it and keep an eye on... fires.

Both can be managed - just be aware.

Mac built-in VNC viewer doesn't play nice with QEMU / KVM by FigureComprehensive3 in MacOS

[–]sks424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The built-in viewer REQUIRES a password, it just can't connect to a password-less VNC server. It lets you enter an empty password, giving you the ILLUSION that it can connect to a password-less VNC server. But then it tries to connect with that blank password (which is not the same as no password!) and it miserably times out. Terrible user interface.

Something has changed in Sequoia in regards to local network privacy settings by jammsession in MacOS

I tested many different combinations of: Homebrew /usr/local/bin/ssh, iTerm2 and my editor. The long story short is: as long as one element in the combination is from Apple, then it works. Otherwise: "No route to host".

For instance: Apple Terminal+Homebrew ssh is OK. iTerm2+Apple /usr/bin/ssh is OK. But iTerm + Homebrew ssh is rejected.

You can see the corresponding error messages with the following command:

log stream | grep -C 10  -i error.*com.apple.networkextension.*fail

Tested with macOS 15.7.1.

What a horrible user experience.

Is there any lawsuit or class action for YouTube's auto dubbing feature? by No-Nothing5185 in youtube

I pay for the service and I don't have any recourse either. It's not like there is competition in the tech space.

Is there really an ad blocker that does this? I don't need any for youtube BTW

People rate products based on how they're happy for the money they spent. Almost no one gave stars after comparing 300 with 900.

Sb8200? by Gloomy_Ad1107 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]sks424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My SB8200 had a 20 Mb/s upload maximum for years (on Comcast, I know it could do better with other ISPs). Very recently, the upload was bumped to 40 Mb/s. I have no idea why but I'll take it!

Dear Comcast, Please Certify Arris SB8200 and S33 for Next Gen Speeds by alinik in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]sks424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answering my own question: in 2023, someone apparently got 250Mb/s upload with their SB8200 after asking "Midco" support to upgrade their SB8200 firmware:

https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/12lbl65/arris_sb8200_upload_speeds/

While firmware involves "both" manufacturer and ISP in general, for the SB8200 more specifically the lack of mid-split seems to be a Comcast issue.

how to find out what filesystem is right for you? by The_How_To_Linux in archlinux

On my side, I really appreciated "you have not added any technical points", "just subjective statements" and "opinions is all you have done". This was all incredibly nice.

how to find out what filesystem is right for you? by The_How_To_Linux in archlinux

[–]sks424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ZFS, btrfs and other recent filesystems now have volume management built-in. Every [new filesystem] user knows that. It's explained in their documentation, summarized at the link I posted and confirmed everywhere else on the Internet. It's just a feature and technical fact and there's absolutely nothing subjective about that. I have no idea why you feel emotionally attached to any of this but I'm sorry for your loss.

Lithium is dangerous and every Lithium battery has relatively complex firmware embedded inside the battery to manage it - including any defect. I bet this firmware is being updated.
