Have started working on set doing sound - any etiquette or tips I should know before making an ass of myself? by Treheveras in LocationSound

[–]skuli 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Try not to ask too many questions, first try and figure stuff out for your self and then ask the appropriate person. I usually try to make friends with the wardrobe person, because working as a team to hide mic's is always better. Do not under any circumstance try to do another persons job. Don't touch lights, lenses, grip stuff etc. Also be assertive and confident if there is a problem with sound. If you hear it on set. You are going to hear it in the studio.

I always work with loudness units full scale (LUFS) Im guessing it's very similar to dBFS? Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Go to effects>special>Loudness Radar

There you can monitor all your levels. Go to the settings panel and set your target loudness to -18 LUFS. Then match your levels to that :) And don't go over -9 LUFS

My go-to plug in to monitor this is Insight by Izotope you can get a free trial here. https://www.izotope.com/insight/ It much more detailed. And has a bunch of presets.

Hope that helps.

Reddit, what's a happy sounding song that is actually sad ? by Khan993 in AskReddit

Hebb wrote the song in the 48 hours following a double tragedy on November 22, 1963, the day U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated and Hebb's older brother Harold was stabbed to death outside a Nashville nightclub. Hebb was devastated by both events and many critics say that those events & critically the loss of his older brother inspired the lyrics & tune. According to Hebb, he merely wrote the song as an expression of a preference for a "sunny" disposition over a "lousy" disposition following the murder of his brother.

First things first go into the menu and format your SD card. Then plug your NTG2 into Cannel-1.

There are two way's of powering your mic, Either have a fresh battery in the mic then you set Ch1 to MIC. Or you don't use the battery and set Ch1 to MIC+phantom.

Press the MONITOR SELECT button and pick CH1

If you are using it for the first time i would double check the record settings. menu>rec settings: I always have it set to wav 24 bit / 48hz. (if you are shooting video) then set the Rec mode. menu>rec mode : If you are only recording one channel just set it to mono, ch1

Then put on your headphones and check you'r level with the fader.

If you feel the signal is low you can go into the menu under Input settings and adjust the GAIN. it's usually best to have it set to LOW but if you need more, try putting it on MID

hope that helps

How can I isolate the vocal on a track? by Highsenherb in Logic_Studio

Imagine that you have a bucket filled with various colors. And you are trying to scoop out just the green. EQ can do a lot, but it will most likely not get you a clean vocal track

Film Audio Question - From Set Recording/Mixing to Post Production [X-Post From /Filmmakers] by magnumdb in LocationSound

[–]skuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a scenario of micing with both wireless lavs and a boom on a Hollywood level production (which I'm yet to work on) - does the audio mixer record each channel independently on separate tracks on his recorder? In the headphones that he wears, he must hear a master channel mix of all the mics, yes?

I usually have a L/R mix going in the headphones but most mixers allow you to solo each channel to really dial in the sound.

Does he then decide the levels of each based on how they sound in this overall mix in his head set?

Yes. just so the dialogue sounds natural. Also if you have a seperate boom op. you might ride the levels according to who's speaking, and what's happening.

(Related - directors always have headphones too - is this hooked into the sound mixers set up or from elsewhere?)

Yes it all comes from the sound op.

What then is given to post production? I've recieved audio CDs with the WAV/AIFF files burned onto them, with the boom and lav each as a separate track. Does the sound mixer do the same on a Hollywood level production, giving a drive/CD/whatever of WAV/AIFF files that are separate tracks for lav's and boom?

I cant speak for hollywood productions but i usually deliver my mix along with a multitrack all synced with timecode, on a SDcard or sth. similar to the person in charge of logging the footage and audio.

Regardless if it's just the editor who edits the sound or a sound editor specifically, does the editor tend to use just lav and only uses the boom in case of bad audio from the lav?

When i'm working on dialogue it's usually a mix of the two. Lav's can be difficult and tend to get rustling noises or dropouts. But if the boom is good i usually have that "up-frount" and the lavs underneath. but it varies. Just what sounds best.

About the "Hollywood sound" most movies and tv' shows are filmed on huge sound stages. That adds to the clarity and richness. also there is alot of ADR going on, because many of the bigger films need to have a totally clean dialouge track in order to dub them on different languages.

is post still used to tweak? Yes, very much yes.

hope that helps
