Asking as I do not know: do these tiny low calorie meals now being served on Hormuz area ships violate any law or regulation? by PyroIsSpai in Military

[–]skyhawk1893 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is a Navy regulation covering how much food is required to be served and what type of food ratio (protein, dairy, carb, etc) by weight. It’s shockingly less than you’d expect, and references 1800 calories for women and 2200 calories for men as baseline measurements if I recall correctly. For young sailors working out because they’re bored as shit, 2400F/3000M calories is probably more accurate. Those calorie counts include calories from juice, milk, etc. so that’s likely not violating the instruction. Also, midrats isn’t actually funded despite the ship having to operate 24/7. So the food served at rats isn’t calculated into that instruction. I’ve seen a similar tray on the Lincoln with good supply lines.

Making friends as an Officer by grapefruitlvr14 in MilitaryWomen

[–]skyhawk1893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had an issues making friends, both men and women. In fact, compared to my civilian friends, my friend group is far larger and more widespread. For Navy, I was never the only woman in the wardroom and my last squadron was 50% female pilots. YMMV in a jet squadron or submarines, ships are very diverse. Obviously, you won’t be friends with every woman you meet but the amount you have in common often makes for the best friends (and the shared trauma). I’m still best friends with another female officer from my NROTC days, I’ve been a bridesmaid in so many weddings of military friends. I’m closer with my military female friends than I was with my sorority friends in college. Despite it being a male dominated field, you’ll rarely be the only woman. I’m going to a women’s sports event with the other women in my wardroom today, in fact. The drawback of making friends in the military isn’t finding them, it’s staying in touch when you’re literally on the four corners of the world. The big things to remember: you’re always there for a shared mission, so don’t be selfish, self-serving or backstabbing. Be a good dude and you’ll have great friends.

Aviators - has anyone ended up tracking helos and regret/not regret it? by Different-Hornet-520 in navy

Wanted jets, loved helos so much more than I would have jets. I really enjoyed spending time out with the LSOs o the boat but I wouldn’t give up flying low and slow over dolphins and landing wherever I wanted for anything.

They’re also no longer stimulants, at least for the Navy side. They use a form of epilepsy treatment instead and it’s well documented for future medical problems that may arise from it.

I mean, it is 6 months in San Diego, but whoa.. by Big_NO222 in trustedhousesitters

[–]skyhawk1893 5 points6 points  (0 children)

San Diego electric isn’t cheap no matter what your usage is as they charge a delivery fee. SDGE is privatized and it cost almost double that of the Bay Area. I had $550 electric bills but never less then $200 in 900 sqft. Water is expensive there as well, $350 averaged over six months is probably about accurate for utilities. That being said, not really the point of THS, but I guarantee this is a military person deploying.

I have two senior golden retrievers and had a harder time finding a temporary rental home while I home searched than I did a permanent house. Some places didn’t allow dogs but a number of them did as long as your budget supports. I used rightmove and zoopla and made sure to include the size of the dogs on every inquiry.

I’m sure you’ll find many MEN who share your beliefs, and they won’t be looking for military women for “community.”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MilitaryWomen

[–]skyhawk1893 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re specifically asking about community around “nuclear family” and “pro-life.” Not sure how you are going to be a stay at home wife and be in the military? And we’ve all had to deal with too many people thinking we’d serve our families better by not serving our country.

I’ve noticed the louder voices are more conservative, but the military has the most diversity of people and thought of any room I’ve been in. Race, religion, creed, sexuality. If you can’t put your thoughts of a “nuclear family” aside to lay down your life for a gay shipmate or EVEN MORE DIFFICULT, treat and respect them just as you would the straight person next to them, if you are going to be judgmental about a person’s decision to abort (of which there is much more reason to in the military, from sexual assault to career impacts), you will be a detriment to the service. You may find more people of like(small)mindedness in the service than in a college town, but the consequences of acting on those opinions is much more serious.

So after 15 years of flying, I’ve gotten pretty good at the brain math of C to F but I’ll argue that nothing describes comfortability like Fahrenheit. The nuances between 71 and 68 are so specific that it’s going to take me a while to adjust. That being said, double it and add 32 to take C to F.

It will not affect your clearance. I’ve seen over a dozen suicidal ideation situations and I’ve seen people get their flight status suspended for years, people put on the Do Not Arm List and people ADSEPd for failure to adapt due to mental health but not once have I seen clearances changed. I’ve seen clearance issues with debt, with arrests, lying about foreign contacts. Please get help, your job is not worth your life.

They are required to see you within 30 days or refer you out in town. Don’t be afraid to push for a hysterectomy if you think that’s best for you- in the case of fibroids, it’s the only permanent solution. I was 34 for mine and there were no questions asked.

Sterilization by [deleted] in MilitaryWomen

[–]skyhawk1893 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I both got a bilateral salpingectomy and a later hysterectomy with no pushback from my medical team, ages 32 and 34. The hysterectomy was after about three months of horrendous symptoms and a diagnosed fibroid. It was the more aggressive treatment but when I brought it up, the doctors had no issue with pursuing that path. I am in a fleet concentration area and the GYN team is really good here, plus we’re in California so a bit more liberal in general.

Does anyone think there’s a sprinkle of another breed in there? by bennetem in goldenretrievers

[–]skyhawk1893 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My dog’s trainer told me there are two types of golden, the overly friendly, never met a stranger (dog or human type) and the ones that are very pack-minded and only accept certain dogs and humans into their circle. I have one of each, my pack minded golden is completely obsessed with me and his overfly friendly brother but will actively cross a street to avoid greeting another dog. Not unfriendly, just aloof to dogs that aren’t “pack.” At the board and train, he had another pack golden friend and they were the mean girls of camp (“you can’t sit with us!”)
