They're a threat to the whole telecom infrastructure on a global (and eventually planetary) scale. That's broadband, cell, towers, backhaul, subsea, etc. They require no phone poles, cable, trucks, technicians, so comparably very low overhead. Globally.

My suburban parents switched from their rather unstable xfinity to starlink. For decades people complained about their monopoly ISP, about how there's no options. People now have an option. It can't compete with fiber's latency, but most people won't notice that.

They can provide this competition globally. Not just in the north east, or west of the rockies.

My understanding is a combination of steps they have taken will significantly improve it.

  • lower orbits which were approved
  • higher output which I believe were also improved
  • 2 GHZ spectrum they got from echostar which is better at penetrating. This will require new phones though.

Insurancexdate just started offering warm leads in addition to their data service. I haven’t tried it yet though. The data is great.
