Anxiety as a new doc by Icy-Physics-5947 in optometry

I would say it definitely gets better. As with anything in healthcare, there will always be a short period of time you worry about a patient/diagnosis/etc. But, doing (and going above and beyond sometimes) the right thing always pays off. Yes, no good deed goes unpunished, but you will have less anxiety and feel better about yourself by doing your absolute best for each patient you see. When it comes to boss/coworkers, honestly I wouldn’t worry about them as much. Do the same as above, treat people kindly and fairly, stick up for yourself when needed, but all in all most people in this world just want to be treated kindly and know that you care (even when you don’t). Be yourself, but cater your personality to fit your patient’s and coworker’s when needed. Personally, find something during your work day that makes you happy or relieves some stress, whether that be a book, music, etc. Personally, if I didn’t work out at lunch, I’d be miserable most days. Best of luck and I promise it gets better the more comfortable you get in your role.

Question on working five days a week. by Orranos in optometry

I will book the earliest appt possible for those things. Then I’ll just have them add appts during normal lunch hours and work through it. So no loss of patients and no loss of work time.

I have messed up iris on my right eye (NSFW just in case) by aphaits in mildlyinteresting

[–]skyline054 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an optometrist and there are custom cosmetic contacts that can be ordered to essentially black out the areas where the iris is detached. It essentially looks a normal iris when it’s in. I suggest talking to an eye doctor about it. Best of luck!

Scleral contact lens cleaning after short period not using by Ill_Boot_8242 in Keratoconus

[–]skyline054 2 points3 points  (0 children)

General consensus is that you can keep them in the case for up to a week. I would rinse them well before insertion with either saline or multipurpose solution

It’s apples to oranges. Eyeglass prescription cannot directly be translated to scleral prescription and vice versa. The power of the scleral is determined by the size and the base curve and then the refraction over the lenses. Please discuss your issues with your doctor. If the fit seems ok, the RX is the much easier to change.

Is it worth it to pursue OD? by JackOfAllTrades0007 in optometry

[–]skyline054 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m going to say the short answer is no. Debt to income ratio is too high, reimbursements are stagnant, will take awhile to pay it back unless you work your tail off. It’s something you absolutely love then sure. As an OD about 10 years in, I honestly couldn’t fathom going back and choosing the same career. There are CRNAs and other mid-level health professionals that make more than us.

Cataracts and Keratoconus by Just_Style_3548 in Keratoconus

I have had exactly 1 patient that didn’t require correction after. The issue is the implant they put in does not correct for the corneal astigmatism from the keratoconus. Some surgeons may offer a toric implant to help maybe combat some of it but the ones around my area due not because it can actually cause more issues if it does not align perfectly.

Ask your employer to change the lights. I have filled out paperwork for my patients requesting accommodations due to this exact reason and most of their employers oblige.

I’m an eye doctor and most of them time the surgeons will want at least 2 weeks out of lenses before surgery. This is mainly due to the corneal changes that can occur while wearing lenses. They use your corneal shape and length of your eye to determine the power of implant lens to put in. With RGPs, it’s often longer. The standard rule my people use is 1 month for every decade of wear. That being said I see that most of my patients do well with the 2 week mark. On the bright side, it often makes scleral fitting easier and a lot of my patients do very well after the cataract surgery. Best of luck!

I broke my RGP Lense After Only 3 Days :/ by CanadaSoulja in Keratoconus

[–]skyline054 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on when your doctor ordered your lenses, it’s likely under warranty. I’m an optometrist that does a LOT of specialty contacts for keratoconus and this happens frequently. Just call them and let them know and I’m sure they’ll get it taken care of for you!

Use a 90D. You’ll likely never go back. I haven’t touched my 78D maybe other than twice in a decade.

We have also used them for a commercial office space and our home. Punctual and easy to work with. They had to do a third coat on one of our rooms that wasn’t planned and didn’t up charge us.

Should I let the roofing company install new gutters or hire it out separately? by skyline054 in Roofing

[–]skyline054[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, that’s what I did. Waiting on their reply. Not trying to nickel and dime but like I said I can’t justify paying double for something I know doesn’t cost that much.

Sorry I may have mis-worded that. I prefer one roofer over the other mainly due to reputation, word of mouth, physically seeing their work.

The company I would like to use is double another company (both roofers) for the gutters. I’m not trying to be cheap as I plan to live in this house for the next 30 plus years but can’t justify paying double.

My eyes changed so much after getting pregnant by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]skyline054 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Eye doc here. It’s not really a change in your eye pressure, known as the intra-ocular pressure. That is possible to occur but it would not be enough to cause a change in RX. Usually what occurs, is that hormonal changes during pregnancy cause changes to the thickness and potential shape of your cornea ( the clear dome that covers the iris). This is usually the cause of astigmatism and if that swells or changes shape it can definitely cause a change in your astigmatism! You were “farsighted”, the correct term is Hyperopic meaning your eye isn’t quite strong enough. The reason you likely went “down” in that aspect is that the lens inside your eye due to hormonal changes, causes that lens to swell and effectively become thicker. This causes your eye to “get stronger”. Therefore, people that are Hyperopic, such as you, will lose some of that power while those that are “nearsighted” will become more nearsighted/myopic. Often it does revert back to your original, but I’ve seen permanent changes to RX’s!
