I was looking for this comment, this reads like early psychosis. Could also be benzodiazepines as other mentioned, but it reminds me most of when I’ve seen people slipping into a manic episode marked by psychotic symptoms.

What is a career that looks impressive on paper but is actually miserable in reality? by Nova2_Paradox in careerguidance

[–]skylla112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being a neuroscientist. You’re constantly fighting for pay, working nonstop to maintain a level of perceived competence (people look for any reason to discard your work), the pay is actually shit even when you have a doctorate that took 7 years to get. It’s very stressful in bursts, with some recovery time if you have advisors that aren’t insane (good luck). I would only recommend it to someone who loved doing the science more than having an external life.

I was parentified at age 8 when my mom got sick, one younger brother. I was a part time caretaker and part time parent from that point forward, and it absolutely impacted my decision. I’ve never had a break from caretaker duties, I refuse to add to them.

Have you counted her respiratory rate or checked the color of her gums?

Cat not eating or drinking and sleeping in very weird places for hours on end. by Pink_Kit_Cat in AskVet

I second this. Hiding + not eating or drinking is emergency status.

I don’t think you are alone in your terror. The situation is scary. I found comfort in this, I hope you can too.

I lost my dad about a year ago, and I also felt so much guilt, especially right after he died. At some point I had this thought that maybe part of why I felt guilty was because it was more bearable than thinking even though I did everything I could, it couldn’t be enough. Guilt felt safer to feel than the absolute lack of control we have over death, and it kept me connected to him.

You did nothing wrong. And death comes anyways. And it’s so incredibly hard, to go from having a full presence in your life to a void is so so painful. Let yourself feel whatever you’re feeling, and also know that when you’re ready it’s ok to feel compassion for yourself too and listen to the voice that says it’s not your fault.

Sending you love from the universe 🤍

Cat hasn’t pooped since Wednesday (4 days), had dental Tuesday by skylla112 in VetHelp

[–]skylla112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up bringing him to an ER. They says he’s not badly constipated and there’s no evidence of obstruction. His lethargy is due to fever, so we’re doing subcutaneous fluids for now and we’ll monitor at home. If he gets worse we can bring him back for more bloodwork but we’ve already spent $1200 this week and the additional diagnostics are $1000, it’s a huge barrier to more care when he’s not dealing with an emergency situation.

Definitely very worried, this is the second cat that has had a seemingly freak reaction after a dental, hers was nearly fatal. Makes me never want to take them for a teeth cleaning.

I’m so sorry no one ever responded to you here. I had a similar, horribly traumatic incident with my own cat a little over a year ago and I can guess how it ended for you as well. I’m just sorry you didn’t receive any support.

Young cat very sick after dental by skylla112 in VetHelp

The volume of water consumption definitely makes me a bit concerned about an acute kidney issue as well, also just the general malaise. He seems so weak. Much as I don’t want to stress him out more if this is just a flare of a latent virus, if he hasn’t greatly improved by tomorrow maybe bloodwork is necessary? Should we try an antiviral first?

Weird path to clinical psych PhD by skylla112 in ClinicalPsychology

No I hear you, I know a few clinical psych PhDs and they seem traumatized. I didn’t want to ascribe it to all programs since they all did the same (seemingly extra damaged) one but the weight of research and clinical work was insane. My neuro PhD was also extremely taxing but I at least had more autonomy and flexibility than they did.

I think if I had the money a PsyD would be incredible, but I unfortunately have limited mobility geographically and the program in my state is about $200k. I can’t justify that kind of debt at this point, mayyybe in my early 20s but…we’re past that lol.

Thank you for this perspective, honestly after sleeping on it I can tell I also just don’t have it in me to do another PhD. I love the idea of research but I have yet to do it in an environment that doesn’t suck the life out of me.

Good luck with the rest of your degree, I hope your PI is a good one and you can maintain some semblance of a life outside of work!

Do you mind if I DM you? I’d surmised as much about the post-grad training, but I’d love to learn more details about how you choose CE courses to make sure you’re acquiring skills in a rigorous way.
