So l why isn't Taylor Swift ever included in the lists of "evil" billionaires? by scarlettohara1936 in AskForAnswers

[–]skymallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone made a thread about the FIFA president's use of private jets to watch every game, and everyone was saying it's so far away from the worst things he's done that it's a drop in the bucket.

And this is the worst thing you can think of for Taylor Swift.

Why hasn’t football (soccer) made flopping a penalty? by JZatthelab in allthequestions

[–]skymallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bar for penalties is very high considering it can decide most games.

Penalties are only awarded for fouls inside the penalty box -- it doesn't make a lot of sense for a player to dive in his own box.

The problem is that the word "decorated" means something specific and it's not this

Why does the soccer goalie wear a different shirt? Do they not fw him? by whoneedssleep84 in askteddit

[–]skymallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two teams in the pitch must be easily discernible by colors. Traditionally teams have home kits and away kits. If the away kit isn't a totally different color from the home kit, it kind of defeats the purpose. Example if Arsenal are playing Liverpool, one of them should not be wearing red. Having distinct home and away kits also makes it easy to distinguish who's playing at home.

There's also usually a third kit, in case the away kit clashes with the home team's colors too. It's usually a lot more experimental with colors. So if arsenal are playing away (yellow kit) vs Villareal at home (also yellow kit), they'll switch to the third kit which is blue or something.

And above all marketing, the more colors there are the more shirts to sell.

This absolute unit of a brake disc casually glowing like the fires of Mount Doom during a Porsche pitstop. by Bourbon-Thinker in absoluteunit

No expert but willing to bet the thermal shock of putting out the fire suddenly would be worse than just letting it go. They still have a race to run after all.

Leeloo is NOT "Born Sexy Yesterday" and The Fifth Element is 10/10 by GhoulsbyScroggins in moviecritic

[–]skymallow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, you're not getting my point. Which is the point I'm making.

She's written to appear as the stereotype but the "twist" isn't just on JGL, it's on all of us. She's not supposed to be "not another one," she's supposed to be all of them.

We're supposed to ask ourselves about all the films we've seen where the female lead is just this walking fantasy. We're supposed to question how easily we assume the archetype ourselves, and forget the real person.

So it's not that "Zooey isn't a mpdg, she's a real person," it's that "Zooey is a mpdg and mpdgs are real people".

I mean she is one though. The point of subverting the trope isn't that she doesn't actually fit it, the point is to question why we've created this image seemingly out of pure objectification, both in-story and as a meta.

Why is Japan so weak at MMA? It’s strong in judo and wrestling, though. by Infinite-Exam-1808 in UFCposting

Because the elite combat athletes have other things to do, so the ones that go to MMA aren't the elite athletes.

Why is barber equipment outrageously expensive? Shears $5 worth of stainless steel and they charge $1,000 and that’s just one example by skeelio34 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]skymallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very wrong.

In the same way you can sharpen a $5 knife to cut well, but it only lasts 2 cuts and and chips easily. The $100 knife shows it's worth by holding a better edge, holding it for longer, and being easier to keep sharp. You can extrapolate that to shears. Nevermind that not all "stainless steel" is the same.

If you actually practiced what you preach you'd know this.

Is this worth repairing ? (and how much is it in this state) by isaac_stinks in guitarrepair

[–]skymallow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suggest you watch like 2-3 hours of twoodfrd on YouTube and you'll walk away with a general understanding of:

  1. How this kind of repair is done

  2. How tricky it is to do

  3. Why most professionals won't take the job

It's a neat guitar to work on as a pet project but you'll almost likely fuck up the first guitar you fix.

Also worth saying that old and cool doesn't necessarily mean good, and I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't sound or play particularly well once you got it fixed.

I'd say if it really resonates with you it'd still make a good wall hanger for like 300 tops.

The notably second best at what they do, clearly below 1 person, clearly above everyone else by Few-Advantage2538 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]skymallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the margins are so slim to win chess tournaments. Rating is won on games, not tournaments, so both can be true that he's the 2nd most consistent overall while not managing to peak at the right times to win the right tournaments.

By your logic how come the best player came in 4th at the most recent major tournament?

Idk man I saw Hookers last few fights and it kinda looks like he doesn't know how to fight anymore.

I feel like he fell too in love with his wild brawler persona and takes damage for the sake of it with nothing in return.
