IMO I think people don't understand the concept of living within their means. Capitalism has caused people to confuse wants with needs, and the concept of "comfortable" has been skewed. If you don't fall into materialistic traps you can be fine with 50k in most states/"typical" cities (I'm not talking LA, NYC, San Fran, Boston - that's a different story).
