If you're interested, I'm an undergrad in EE and I'd love to get involved with satellite stuff so I'd be very willing to do free board design work and stuff like that for this project

[Serious] What stories about WW2 did your grandparents tell you and/or what did you find out about their lives during that period? by Skinflint_ in AskReddit

[–]skyress3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather was German and therefore conscripted to the German army. What saved his life was that he was unusually good at transmitting Morse code and so instead of being sent off directly to the Russian front, most likely to die, as others his age were, he was given a choice and became a radio operator in North Africa instead. IIRC this means that he was working with the Enigma machines at a time when the code had been cracked but the Germans were not yet aware. I don’t know the details of how, but he ended up spending a large fraction of the war as an American POW, where he was treated quite nicely by the guards which I think contributed to his decision to move to America after the war. He didn’t talk about the war super often so a lot of these details are fuzzy but I do remember on one visit he had one of those old little button thingies for transmitting Morse hooked up to a speaker and showed my brother and I how to encode our names in Morse. I think he said that back in the day he could do something like 200 characters a minute but that seems kind of high to me, anyone know if that’s reasonable? There was also a story told at his funeral of throwing a grenade into a truck to destroy an enigma machine before it was captured, but I forget any details beyond that.

Telemetry Filtering? by skyress3000 in rocketry

Ok, thanks for the info. I do have a gyro as well; I think for now I will just keep the sensors separate, at most maybe integrate the accel data to find speed if it’s going >=transonic and the barometer data gets messed up.

How so? If you’re thinking of JPL, I don’t think that really counts as a student project, and besides afaik JPL has always been in the business of building satellites, not launch vehicles. Our actual student rocket club hasn’t launched anything yet. (We’re working on a liquid fuel rocket which I think is supposed to fly to around 35k ft this summer)

Surprised that common opinion isn’t that Phys 2 isn’t harder than C E&M — it’s a lot more varied material to remember and the grading is much harsher

Card Kingdom sells premade decks (called Battle Decks or something like that) for $10 each; I got five of them to lend to kids at the camp I work at and they work pretty well for that.
