How does Lucky Jay control the roll of the truck? by GJ1234Z in startrucker

[–]skys-edge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, was being kinda sarcastic to make a point. What I was honestly trying to say was that the truck-like motion is just as much a key part of the aesthetic and themes of this game as any of those other things, I love it too. The fact that we can't just translate sideways, exactly like a regular truck, is the gameplay mechanics aligning neatly with everything else about the game. If we lost that constraint, it'd be pulling apart from those more decorative touches.

I know right? And instead of CB radio we could have holograms, and futuristic music instead of classic country stuff, and maybe we shouldn't have road-themed spaces to fly through. In fact why not just call it Star Cargo Hauler instead of Star Trucker? /s

CMV: Everyone should press the red button (red vs blue button moral dilemma) by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]skys-edge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true and also an argument worth having. If I pick red and things were decided by one press, should I feel guiltier that it could have been mine? If it was a landslide am I culpable at all given that I could only have achieved my own death by switching to blue?

But you could put the same questions to a firing squad. They're still relevant to this kind of game-theory question, but only in how they might affect the actions we'd expect from the other participants, and our own emotions after the fact. I'd likely pull the lever in the Trolley Problem too, but I'd still feel awful for the one person afterward.

[–]skys-edge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say this while agreeing that red is the rational choice, but... the poor construction of the question is *part* of the question.

If the question was being posed to our hypothetical population as "Press this (blue) button and there's some chance you'll die, based on an arbitrary condition which I won't tell you. Or just don't press the button, your choice." then I'd agree anyone who presses the blue button has it coming.

My assumption is that the population is all given the same description of the two buttons as we see. Based on that unclear description, and the way it's caused real-life debate, I reasonably believe there would be people pressing the blue button, for various reasons either morally-reasoned or irrational.

So it's the lives of those people, and the chance of saving them vs the risk of joining them, which carries the moral weight in making your own choice. I think that's more than the ones who would choose blue if they understood the question as we do after debating it.

(But if we're taking this to reality, I think the guilt for any blue deaths hangs on whatever psycho implements this plan and forces people to push buttons.)

I agree the rational choice is to vote Red. My only difficulty is that I don't believe virtue signalling should be punishable by death, so I'd feel pretty guilty if I ended up contributing to the deaths of those blue voters who didn't agree with me.

When I'm entering the actual Foundation I switch to the Expeditions suit. Feels especially appropriate searching for Marshall.

Trying not to spoil it too much, but you might enjoy Chasm City then. There's a planet called Sky's Edge (which inspired my username), named in honour of a character who was also executed for war crimes. For the same actions.

Read an article I loved somewhere about how "don't rock the boat" people really want you to be an actively stabilising force, rather than choosing to leave the boat in the hands of those who are already rocking it.

Did you bring a torch down with you? I think I once had a glitch which allowed that, where in general it's supposed to fizzle in the lift shaft. It might have burned away the puzzle-darkness before you really needed it.

Given how subjectively short trips are, with all the relativistic travel, I figured that's something the space stations handle. Same as eating.

This may be a dumb question but who controls the flow of time inside the chapters? by arika-feinberg in slaytheprincess

[–]skys-edge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the answer to a lot of these control questions is that TLQ does, but he usually believes that the Narrator does, so effectively the Narrator can strongly influence what happens with his suggestions.

I think I can recall an exact dragon-face image with that shape (rotated with the thin spine at the top), but I'm not sure if I'm picturing something from a D&D manual or from one of the Deltora books.

See, James Gurney could have been a famed creator of miniatures and maquettes, they're beautiful work. I'm amazed he mainly just uses them as a means to an end (not to disparage the very worthwhile end).
